1978 911sc ticking
Hi folks,
Newbie Porsche owner question. I imported a 911sc to Canada, driving straight away. I did plugs, wires, cap, rotor, tires straight away. I don't know the service history on it. It had 151xxx miles when I got it and I've put on 2000 miles. I have what was a slightly noticeable ticking from the right hand cylinder/s (sounds like one), to a very noticeable ticking sound. I believe there is now some performance loss. From what I can see exhaust nuts are all intact. No noticeable cracks in the manifold. It does sounds like an exhaust tick, and at times when I turn off the car I can hear that compression gasp. I notice two plug wires had popped loose as well on the same side. I'm going to recheck plugs are tight when the car cools. Doing the valve check is obvious. There was a video with no comments on YouTube that had the exact same sound. Thoughts please! |

Might be time to pull the valve covers check valve lash, rocker shafts and for broken head studs.

Ok thanks. I'll research what to look for with the rockers. I assume that a stud can be broke but in place, otherwise I hear some real nasty sounds.

A valve adjustment will be a great job to get to know your engine better. There may be a pelican in your area who would show you the ropes (and drink your beer).

+1 Valve Adjustment may be needed but also check for loose exhaust bolts or rust pin holes on the muffler.

The sound is right side forward, cylinder 6ish location. All external nuts on visual are in place, and with the exception of the heat exchangers having some play, exhaust system and connections look solid. I ordered the Kirk tool today and will do the overdue oil change and valve check, then I guess it gets expensive after that!

How about a sound or video clip?
No, not necessarily expensive. First step is to ID the noise. "some play"? please video that too.

Sounds like exhaust leak to me. I had a very similar sound when one of the gaskets for the headers were not mounted properly.
Could be a crack in a weld or joint in the pipes close to the heads. Or it could be (hope not) a couple of cylinder bolts snapped, causing leakage directly from the combustion chamber. The latter would explain loss of power too. Start checking the easiest bit, (headers), then work your way from there. Good luck!

Yes it does sound much like an exhaust leak, similar to a manifold/header to which I've heard on other vehicles. Thanks everyone for your input.

thats an exhaust leak. take the whole exhaust off and regasket the system, and dont overtighten the manifold to header nuts- use a torque wrench.
i would adjust the valves as well, adjust them snug as well or youll have a bunch of noise when youre done

There is the possibility it is the air pipe that goes into the head next to the exhaust. Some SC's have them still fitted. Mine rusted a hole in it and it sounded like the car was dying
![]() There are plugs that can screw in to replace the pipe. If you put it up on axel stands/hoist and run the engine you will be able to hear it if this is the situation. |

A leak from the air injectors at the head will also make this exhaust leak sound.

Well I decided to buy a jack and get the rear up and check under valve cover as the exhaust looked intact. I found two head studs staring at me. I felt good I found the problem but it's going to cost some cash! I'm not going to mess with it. I'm going to pony up and have a local guru do the work.
