3.6 conversion Brain ;part three

The BRAIN, Slammed will like this part as he waits for these parts to arrive at his door, I havent got my install kit from Timmins yet so I decide to start doing some things that have to be done, I have the new brain and decided its time to take the old one out, please remember that at this time you have the battery cable off, i have power seats, so to take out the seat i had to move it forwrd, reconnect cable hit key woops, fuel all over the floor, so please pull your relays, The first thing i noticed was that i keep the car clean but, things have found thier way under the seat, anyway, pull the clip holding the connection to the unit and pull the wiring connection from it. There are three 8 or 9mm bolts holding it down to the floor. when you lift it you will see a ground also undo this bolts it has two brown wires and is held in place by a 10mm bolt, the brain is removed and the wiring is loose. The wiring loom runs along the center tunnel back to just above where you disconnected the shifter, pull (see picture) there is a rubber groumet here that goes in a hole about a inch and a half, the 3.6 loom has a groumet thats (i havent measured yet) like 2.5 inches round, Im gonna buy a hole saw the correct size so the groumet will fit neatly. You will notice that I havent removed the cdi and tray (see picture), I have decided to wait on the kit instructions to have a better ideal of where to cut the loom. I want to have enough wire to be able to do my wiring, but also leave slammed enough to do his, there is a new brain and wiring to the engine that will be installed. Like I said I will wait on the kit so that I can see what they suggest and make my decisions from there. As always any questions let me know, stew09@aol.com , Kevin

You'd better get a better wiring diagram, your pointing to the rear window defogger relay, not the CDI box in the last pic..

Um, quickly as I have a party to go to!

Do not remove the isolated relay shelf. You may still need the relays & fuses and the 14 pin connector in the rear connects to the 964 and/or 993 engine interface connector (with adapter or with pins moved). Remove the CDI unit and all the wiring to it as well as the entire old DME harness. Don't cut any harnesses! There is no reason to. If you are installing a 964, the coils and coil actuators mount where the CDI was mounted. The harness hole needs to be opened up to 2.25". DO NOT USE A HOLE SAW! The main battery cable loom is hidden behind your torsen tube exactly where you will be cutting. Use a nibbler from the inside of the car. If you don't have a power nibbler just use a hand model, and as a benefit, it will give you Popeye forearms.

Cheers,

Mifintifin

Mifintifin yes I am aware of the harness, but i will be cutting the hole from inside the engine compartment to the cabin of the car, i see what you are saying, but there is no risk because inside the cabin there is nothing to damage, most of the parts will fit in the new box i am installing right where that plate is, Kevin

Kevin,

I just measured the stock rubber boot on the DME. In my case I have to cut a 60mm diameter hole into the firewall.

For what it's worth you can check out my web page. Its www.di.com/home/ingo
Go to Targa, Conversion, Electrical. Just finished throwing some pictures in there tonight.

Happy New Year,
Ingo

ischmitz im sure the hole i need to cut will be the same, feel free to add anything you have found as you go on my post, I actually have my car on four rail road ties that are about 18 iches long with stops on it, I can get under the car and the motor slid right out with out having to jack the car up, but remember to start cutting from the engine compartment side or like the other post said you will get the harness, Kevin

I have yet to fix my tranny before the real work can start. Maybe I'll start on the harness installation in the meantime. I yet have to figure WHERE exactly to cut the hole.

Have you seen those neat hole cutters where you drill a pilot hole than put one half of the tool to each side of the culprit and tighten a screw to perform the cut. Not sure what they are called. A friend borrowed me one for the oil cooler installation. It makes nice round holes and ate the 2mm sheetmetal like butter.

Do you have a web site or something where you share what you are doing?

Ingo

ischmitz, no web site, i have been so busy that its all i can do to post here work and do the conversion, its called a hole saw, they are like 5-8 bucks at Lowes or Menards and come in 60mm size, I am gonna use the hole the old harness came out off, i just have to enlarge it, look at my picture and you will see the hole it has white around it, have you taken your old harness out yet? anyway it is right above the center tunnel, when you took the plate off to disconnect the tranny from the shifter, its about two inches above that, what year is your car, if you have a brain under the passenger seat then you will already have a hole and just need to enlarge it, and I promise a web site as soon as this conversion is done, Kevin

Mine is a 74 with no brain. So no hole. I thought the hole for the DME harness would be cut into the firewall to the left of the drivers side shock tower top inside the engine compartment to protect the harness from the elements.

By putting the hole close to the tunnel the harness would be pretty exposed wouldn't it?

If you look at the second picture down you will notice the hole I am talking about, you will also see the control arms, it comes out of the hole and immediatly turns left torwards the drivers side of the car,yea no more exposed then anything else, Kevin

Kevin, I wish someone would chime in here. From the attached picture and where the boot sits on the 964 DME harness the only sensible location for the hole would be where the red arrow points.

The dull part lying across the rear cross member is the sticky cloth tape insulating the harness. That is supposed to run inside the passenger cabin from what I understand. It sort of glues the harness into place.

If I would choose your location I would either have to relocate the rubber boot substantially or the entire cabling would not match to the O2 sensor, the coils etc.

That is the exact Point to go trough the Body , you will have all the Wire above the Engine and keep it away from the weather .
On the Inside you just follow the Wheelarch and then below the Rocker to the middle of the seatconsole ,you go trough the Console and you are there . If you guys need Pictures from a C2
Enginebay and rearseat area let me know . I am to stupid to post them here .
