1987 carrera, I have a problem with the oil presse gauge pressure gauge showing 5 bar all the time. It jumps to 5 when the car is started and stays there until the engine is stopped.
I disconnected the oil pressure switch wire and it still does the same thing Any suggestions? |

Sounds like your pressure sensor could be bad in the engine bay. Do a search to test it and if bad don't buy the cheapo one buy the good one.

Post a pic of your gauge and the sender unit you disconnected.
Are you sure it is not "pegged" in the up position, which indicates missing ground.

Quote:
David, The oil pressure switch is nothing but a switch. What it does is switch off the indicator light on the dash when oil pressure is generated by the oil pump in the crankcase. It has nothing to do with the pressure gauge per se except it tells you that there is some oil pressure in the crankcase. The oil pressure sender unit located near cylinder #4 sends the electrical signal to the pressure gauge. Both oil sender unit and the gauge should be in good working condition to get the correct oil pressure reading. Installing a mechanical gauge would tell you the actual oil pressure during operation of the engine. Tony |

^^^, I think OP meant the Oil Pressure Unit that he disconnected, that is why I asked him to post a pic for clarification.

This is correct. At least in my case. The needle will peg if you have a bad conncetion. Very easy to fix. Don't jump to the conclusion that the sender is bad until you verify a good solid connection at the sender.

oil pressure
thanks guys...
I questioned my mechanic and he showed me the way to test it... you attach an electrical wire into the the the sensor female wire and touch the other side to ground while the ignition key is on. if the gauge needle jumps down from 5 bar to 0 then the sensor is the problem and should be replaced. |
