Thoughts on 964 Turbos

I realize there is a certain love/hate relationship between people on this board and 964s. I myself have always liked them. Anyway, I was thinking that I wouldn't mind replacing my 911SC with a 964, and then I thought, I'd also really like a turbo.

So, what can people tell me about 964 turbos? Are there any issues with them, like the early 964s? Also please feel free to give me your general opinions about pursuing this course of action.

Thanks.

They are just like 930's ... but heavier :-)

No issues (they had like what? ... 15 years to iron out all engine problems), and no extra horsepower (30 at most)...just pure weight :-))

There was very special 3.6 964 T but it's rare and mucho expensive.

i heard A/C is much better tough

I think the 964 turbos are one of the best looking made, the race version was a totally fat car, wish i had one, so i guess my wide body sc with c2 bumpers and 3.6 satisfy me, Kevin

I had a 78 body with a 965 drivetrain. It was awesome to say the least. Most people agree the C2T is probably the best looking turbo bodied car. As Beep said, it is a result of many years of refinements. The 964 however has had its share of problems, like head gasket leaks, clutch, etc. Either find one cheap, or one that has been repaired. There is alot of confusion over the differences. The 964, is basically a new body and new engine/drivetrain over the pre 89 cars. The 965 uses a new body, but the same old 3.3 engine (with upgraded CIS.exhaust etc). They both use coil over suspensions, etc. Anyway, back to your question, there really arent any issues with the 965s. Awesome cars..

As stated, 964 turbo unless you get the relatively scarce 3.6 turbo has the engine pretty well sorted since it's the same as the older turbos. You will get the benefit of the G50 5spd tranny, and the aerodynamic enhancements as well as better brakes and better suspension than the ealier turbos. It will likely be heavier which reduces the benefits of the bigger brakes, better suspension, and slight power bump, but I think it will still be a better car in the long run.

Thumbs up As good as it gets

I know I would like to park one of these next to the 89 turbo cab.

"The factory ultimately built 75 of these cars with the very last single turbo car for the U.S.A. (VIN #480466) being a Flat-Nose. This site is dedicated to those cars and to the few other cars which feature the X88 option 3.6 Single Turbo "S" motor (M64/50S)."

964 Turbo ia a very nice car, although below 3000 rpm the car seems dead....you just have to drive it, it has a much better G50 tranny, the A/C has improved , pwr steering is a plus ( when you park ) and I just like those turbo brakes. If you could find a 3.6 , go for it....

I noticed that there is a 964 Turbo on eBay:

964 Turbo

What does everyone think a car like this is worth? What is the price range I'm looking at for a 964 Turbo?

Thanks for your responses.

You see a lot of modified 964 turbos that put out some outragous Hp. Combine this with rear wheel drive, one turbo, turbo lag, and over 60% of the weight in the rear and their scarcity might be explained by there presence at the salvadge yard. They rethought out the turbo with the 993 twin turbo, all wheel drives. Brutually fast but very unforgiving.

Why bother? What's the difference between a regular 964 and a Turbo to 60? like 3/10ths of a second?

What's the difference between a regular 964 and a Turbo from 60 to 160? More than 3/10ths I would guess.

It's a turbo thing. Some NA guys just won't understand.
