Help PLEASE

I found my shift rod bushing was destroyed so I installed a new one and now after two days of trying I cannot get fifth and reverse. Needless to say the shifter was very sloppy before the new bushing, now it's very tight. I have adjusted the coupler in the past and know it can be a pain but I just can't get it. Iam putting shifter in neutral with the stick vertical and pulled to the drivers seat-- I then turn the coupler to the passenger side and tighten right? For me no go. It feels as if the shifter itself will not go right far enough to get fifth and reverse.
Thanks
Ernie 81sc

Did you check if the car is actually in neutral? See if it rolls with the hand brake off. Sometimes the gear lever feels like it's in neutral and it's not.

Picture is sideways. Really takes two people..rotate rod as you are facing rear of car counter clockwise, pre-stressing. Then other set of hands tighten. May take a few times to get it right. Good luck, Tim

That's right.

Just did ours with the help of another member.

You do need two people.

Best,

Gerry

Yep. I use a bungee cord to the drivers door to hold the gear lever in place. Then from pass side with seat full forward wrench on the coupler. Then I got the j west coupler clamp so you only need one hand and tool to tighten it all up.

I now have ALL the bushings replaced and cannot believe how tight everything is. I was able to adjust the coupler on the first try. It is perfect and I'm happy
