No more red Porsches
Have you notice there are no more new red , (I mean like the red on the pre-89 Porsches), Porsches anymore? Red Porsche was the standard color back in the '80s. I think the buyer's taste has shifted towards metallic colors. Just an observation.

LA is a big P market.. and my brother meets people w/red 911's who are pissed off at getting traffic tickets in LA..these guys sell the cars because of the color.. but red is the most striking color.. flat black would probably be the most CHP resistant.. no hard info

I've maintained that I attracted more unwanted attention in my jeep 98 Cherokee, (metallic 'chili pepper' red (dark)) than I do in my black Porsche.
Red sucks. Unless you have a Ferrari, it's not worth it.

I have owned three Guards red Porsche's. I was looking for a red one the first time, the next time I was OK with red and most recently, I wanted something besides red. There is something about them...when you see them in person, they just look great.
I have seen a new red color that I like a lot. I think it is called zanzabar? It looks great, IMHO.

Did anyone say red?
The PO had my car painted not a shade of std Porsche red, oh no.... He had to have it painted "Ferrari red"....way brighter than india, guards or peru red. The work was originally done at the shop where the wife works and she told me they had to special order it from Ferrari. Good? Bad? I dunno...but it's different and for red I guess it's pretty cool. But given a choice I don't think I would get another red 911...out here in So Cal, the cops definitrly turn and look at you.

YES...thats it. Zanzibar Red. In that picture it kind of has a pink tint. In the sunlight, it looks more of a cross between orange and red.

As far as red goes, my favorite is Arena Red.

I owned a '60 356B for six months about four years ago that the PO had painted Ferrari red. He told me that he had the car stripped to bare metal and showed me pictures of the work. Four months into ownership a crack appears right by the jack hole and there's a quarter inch of bondo covering rust right there. I ran from that car so fast after re-selling it a Pomona (where I bought it) that I could have gotten a ticket on the 10 freeway on foot!

Gary - I totally agree with you. If I/we ever get another porsche it will be arena red.

I tend to think companies use metallics because they're sensory confusing. Hides a lot of mistakes. All the little speckles and specks overwhelm our eyes and we simply cannot spot errors as well.
Grays-silvers-white-black metallics do not allow full sight of everything on the surface whereas the traditional non-metallic reds for example, make it very hard to conceal errors, bad paint, imperfect fitting...

Yeah, Arena has to be my favorite as well. I think I'd die a happy man with an Arena red 993TT with black powdercoated wheels and dark tint. The thing I like about arena is that it's metallic and most importantly a very understated and classy color. I like Zanzibar a lot, but I think after owning a zanzibar red car for two months I wouldn't look at it the same anymore and realize I'd made a mistake.

I remember reading an interview with Ferry Porsche, probably in the late 60s,
and he was asked what his favorite color was on a 911. He replied that 911s are exuberant cars and that they should be painted bright colors. And that he preferred red. Since reading this I have noticed that when he was in a photo with a 911 most of the time the car was red. When I was searching for a 911 I really wanted a slate gray or silver car, but when a nice red one crossed my path I used Ferry's preference to justify getting it. As far as being a ticket magnet, I thought the same thing. But ( knock on wood ) it hasn't happened yet, and it's not because I drive the speed limit. ![]() that could also have something to do with the radar detectors. ![]()

FWIW, I have never prefered Guard's Red on SCs or Carreras, it's pretty but too common. Strangely enough it's one of my favorite colors on 996s, they are not very common and beautiful, IMO of course. I was at the local dealer a while ago and they had a new 996tt in G.R. in the service area w/ the extra HP option and a lot of other expensive stuff on it, I could swear it was talking to me, "take me home", that sort of thing, like they all used to in the good old days.
