smokey mo-fo !

Holy hell, my car is smoking a lot all of a sudden. The car has sat for 5 1/2 days while i had the DME out and waited for my SW chip to arrive. Today on lunch i anxiously installed said chip, started it and noticed a good deal more blue smoke out the tail pipe than normal. (would smoke on start up after sitting a few days, but only a little and it would stop after about 5 seconds of running)

This smoke won't go away. It's diminished, but still continues to smoke even after a 2 mile test run and back home. I've recently installed a Euro Pre-Muffler, and now the chip. Can't really attribute the smoke to the chip, but damn. What could have happened in the past 5 days ? It didn't smoke like this after the pre-muff install, and now there are actually oil droplets collecting on the rear lid.

BTW, the SW Chip is a helluva improvement. Just like everyone said. Now the car is feeling sporty.

Try a five mile run. You may have oil in your exhaust from seeping past guides.

Takes mine ten minutes to clear up sometimes. Sometimes I get no smoking even after a long sitting spell. I have two exhaust ports that have fossilized oil in them (pulled exhaust). I wonder if it has to do with where the valve train stops?

Odd why it just started on yours. Mine has been doing it long time.

Well, i've only had the car for about a month. I'm a newbie but it's never smoked like this before. Has me worried i'll be doing the $10k engine dance before the newness has even worn off.

How long should you drive it?
Until the smoke stops!

Tori, seeing as you are a newb, are you familiar with how to check the oil tank level properly? If it is overfilled, that can cause smoking.

If my 2.7 sits for about a month it will smoke slightly on initial start up. I am guessing that on mine the oil will seep past the oil pump gears so the oil level in the crank case rises (the longer it sits). If it sits long enough the oil can get to the level of the cylinder bores coating the cylinder walls. It takes a little while for mine to clear up, maybe 30-45 seconds until the scavenge pump can catch up and get the oil back into the tank. I have good oil pressure while running so I'm not too worried about the pump just yet.

Yessir, and i'm actually just below 1/2 (in between the dots, warmed up, idling)

Did you have a cat on it prior to the premuffler?
A cat would hide the blue smoke.

I had the exact problem... it's likely worn valve guides. The cat masks the smoke and the SW chip, though totally awesome, changed the idle vacuum settings ans more oil gets sucked past the valves guides into the exhaust.

Mine put out a lot more smoke with a cat bypass pipe and SW chip right after I installed them. Hate to say it but a top end rebuild may be the only solution.

How many miles are on yours? Start tracking oil consumption if you aren't already. That will tell a lot.

Rothsport Oil Valve
"oil will seep past the oil pump gears so the oil level in the crank case rises (the longer it sits). If it sits long enough the oil can get to the level of the cylinder bores coating the cylinder walls."

My '83 would smoke after sitting 10 days. Oil was seeping into the case.
This doesn't happen with my '87 - it never smokes on startup.

Second on the SW chip

Mine started smoking on idle after installing the SW chip. Chip is great but I get the feeling it shows problems that might have been masked by less aggressive settings with the stock chip.

I redid all the plugs, and fixed a few issues here and there and it's smoking now only sporadically. I still need to fix a small vacuum leak. I burn a quart every 600 miles or so. Doesn't really bother me yet and John Walker said a quart every 600 isn't so bad. So I'm just driving her.

Also I don't think a top end will cost you 10k. More like 5-6

That makes the most sense. No doubt it's got some worn guides, and stem seals @ 105K (these motors have stem seals ? All this new smoke seems to be a result of the SW Chip swap. Bummer. She sure does drive out nice though.

So after work, rigged up the camera, started i filming and started it up. Of course, no smoke. Took it for a good 25 mile drive, thru town, back roads, then up the highway.

I didn't get 4 blocks away and it was smoking again on every stop. Smoke was rolling past me as i would come to a stop. Couldn't really see it while driving, but at every stop, and continuing for a good 15+miles. I'd stop about every 5 miles and get out to take a good look at the the tailpipe emissions. Constant light smoke every time. After about 22 miles, on the last stop it finally wasn't smoking at idle. Once back in the garage, no smoke at idle but you would get smoke when revved.

^^^ That's smoke on deceleration.
Interesting the SW chip makes it worse.

Were you able to set the AFR?

It was hard to tell the color but I will take your word for it. How does the exhaust smell? Kinda sweet smelling especially on drives? Don't be breathing it in too much just wondering?

Also you now have basically an open exhaust no cat to clean it. Try this, put a DVM to the O2S and ground it to the engine and post the voltage readings, This will give you a sense of how rich or lean it may be.

Smoke on deceleration is a classic symptom of worm valve guides.... I lived with it for over a year.
