Question Troubleshooting washer system

My '83 is equipped with headlight washers. Neither the windshield washers nor the headlight washers have ever worked and now I'm starting to work through the issues.

Bentley only covers windshield washers, so I have a few questions...

1) According to the PET, it looks like there are two different pumps. One is up near the brake fluid reservoir. Not sure where the headlight washer pump is actually located.

2) I think I remember reading that the headlights have to be on to engage the headlight washers. True?

3) I already know I have to replace the line from the filler neck to the reservoir. Both pumps share the same reservoir, correct?

Other than checking that the pumps run with 12V and check valves are clear, is there anything else I should look at?

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

I'm messing with the ones on my '85 now. They share the same reservoir, that's why it's about 2 gallons. On my model, the headlights have to be on for the washer to work. Hit the switch once then the relay should cycle it. Don't hold the button down, just push & release. Check your owners manual to be sure.

Look on page 450 for what should be your parts diagram

My windshield pump is at the front of the frunk by the battery. My headlight pump is on the bottom left side of the reservoir, but yours might be in the frunk too, or behind the valance. You can test each with jumper wires from the battery: directly to the connector on top of the windshield pump & to the disconnected plug to the headlight pump (hides behind the battery on mine). Brown is ground.

The headlight washers put out a LOT of water so have some towels or a tarp spread out over your open frunk. Ask me how I know...

To get to the headlight washer plumbing you'll need to remove the valance, this may help Can you remove front valance without removing bumper?

Haven't gotten too far on the windshield system, but the drivers side is squirting so I'm not in that big of a hurry there.

Thanks, guys.

I was beginning to think no one saw this because I posted it during the debate.

I have many, many washers. They are so great you will not believe it. Many, many pumps. Many, many check valves. I know people who have pumps and washers. Make washers great again.
