How do I determine which '74 I have?
 

I need to order a Momo steering wheel and hub for my new-to-me '74 911. Apparently there two hub options-- one for 7/74 and earlier and one for 8/74 and later. Does anyone know if there are visual cues to the stock wheel and/or hub to determine which I need?
Alternately, is there a way I can use my VIN to determine build month?

You could use the last 4 digits of the VIN to get a rough idea of build date, other clues would be the date stamp (which would at a guess be a couple of months before) on things like the spare wheel, back of the instrument cluster gauges etc.

I think the difference between the early and late steering wheel set up, is the length of the steering column, a good clue might be the covers which go around the steeering wheel hub. Early = say 6" depth to dash and later say 3" depth to dash. Something like that.

Look at the Certification sticker in the driver's side door jamb and you'll find both the VIN and the car's build date.

One difference is the early hubs had the turn signal cancel bar integrated in them, while the later hubs had it as a separate piece that bolted on.
So, remove your wheel, and see if the turn signal cancel thingy is molded right into the hub, or bolted on. I wouldn't trust a date stamp for something like that, especially when you're right/on that cusp.

I'm going to a friends shop to do the install, so taking the wheel of just to check on the signal cancel thingie. Maybe I'll order both hubs and return the one I don't need.

Which begs the question--will it be obvious which hub I need? They look quite similar in pics.

That would appear to be the 1974 to 1975 model year split.

The problem is that almost every picture of the Momo 230 or Momo 231 are showing the top, not the bottom.

5th picture down, downs the turn signal cancel ring on a LATER steering wheel. This is the one where it's a separate piece bolted to the factory hub. The EARLIER hubs had this piece molded right into the metal, it's not removable.
This is the surest way to know which one you need. Pull the factory steering wheel, flip it over, and examine that turn signal cancel thingy.

The Momo 230 is the EARLY one. The Momo 231 is the LATER one.



Also ,this is all based on what I remember, having received the wrong hub once. There might be other differences between the 230 and the 231, but that was a MAJOR, easily recognized difference that could be checked on your car before you order.

I ordered them both just to be safe. Pelican Parts customer service indicated that the splines on the two hubs are different, and that only one of the two hubs will fit properly. Hopefully it will be an easy observation come installation time.

Just to close the loop here...my date stamp was 7/74, but I needed the later (231) hub, NOT the one that was listed for for use through 7/74...
