3.2 in a 69E Targa - what is the exact process

I have searched the archives on this and I can't find a straight answer. What exactly is required powertrainwise (labor and parts) to put a stock 3.2 (from an 84 Carerra in this case) into an early 911 (stock 69E MFI Targa). If the engine will fit without bodywork, is it just a matter of connecting the wires and oil lines? What I want to gain is a more reliable, cleaner running, more efficient, and more powerful car, in that order, so I would want to keep the 3.2's catalyst and the EFI. I also want to keep my 901 transmission. I am not building a race car - just the cleanest, most reliable daily driver 911 possible that has the classic look of the early targa.

Rich,
I recently purchased a 1973 911 W/ a 1986 3.2 engine. The engine is completely stock with the cat and all. Right now it is up on jackstands with no rear bumper so the engine bay is very accessible. I can take pics for you or look at electrical stuff if you want. My car has the 915 tranny so no help there. The engine fits without any bodywork needed.
I wasn't involved in the swap so I can't help you there, but I can give some insight on a completed swap.
Let me know if you need anything.

I guess Marc isn't on. He started with a '77 2.7.

I am in the process of retrofitting a 3.2 in a '71E with a 901 tranny. The 901 will work but not with the stock Carrerra heat exchangers. The crossover tube that runs under the transmission at the flywheel interferes with the clutch cable mounting ear. I ended up using SSI's and used my old '71 sheetmetal to convert the heater system to the earlier style. The only modification I had to make was on the left air take-off from the engine shroud. It had to be recontoured to clear the distributor cap. I have everything installed but am having trouble getting spark to the plugs. I used Marc's guide as a reference but am now trying to trouble shoot why I am not getting spark. Good luck! JB

Wow. That website covers the 2.7 change nicely. I'll bet that the 901 requires a special flywheel (Patrick motorsports?) and clutch and the wiring would be different.

Take the old motor out, then put the new motor in.

PS: Should be a fun car!

The flywheel from the '84 is required and your clutch, TO brg. and disk from the '69 will bolt right up. You have to notch the transmission housing as Marc describes to clear the speed and reference sensors. Get the wiring and DME from the '84 and install as Marc describes. JB

Hi,

I'm installing a 3.0 CIS into a 69 911E.

To install the 3.0 CIS motor into my car I needed to swap the 69 901 transmission for a 70/71 901 transmission and buy a 70/71 clutch package (more expensive ($450) then other pkgs since this pkg was only used for two years). My understanding is that the 3.0 will not bolt up to the older 901 trans...so I suspect that would be true for the 3.2 motor.

I'm retaining the CIS system for now (which will require some mods to fuel lines and a new fuel pump). CIS is not a bad word; it is an inexpensive, reliable system that makes good power. Others may disagree....

Not a whole lot of detailed web information about "hot rodding" early 911s. I hope to detail my project on my website at some point.

I will be running SSI exhaust to a single outlet muffler for now.

The person that is installing the motor/trans has run into some wiring "challenges" as the 3.0 harness needs to be mated to the 69 E existing harness. Hopefully the tach will work. There's an article in this month's excellence magazine about the oil temp switch in an early modified car....looks like I'll need to upgrade the gauge/sender to get accurate oil temperatures (important info!)

Finally I will be adding a front fender oil cooler from BAT inc. The offer a kit to add oil cooling to early cars. In my view you'll need a front oil cooler with a 3.0 or 3.2. The 69 E's didn't have a front oil cooler so far as I know. The 69 S's did have a front oil cooler.

The project is coming along....it started in July. The 3.0 motor I traded for 2.0 E motor need new head studs, P&Cs, seals, etc.
To make installation of the front oil cooling system easier (and to use the early oil tank), my mechanic mounted an early engine oil cooler on the 3.0 motor. Otherwise adapters for oil line connections at the engine oil cooler and oil tank would be required...I don't have all of the details on this. One the newer oil tanks there is a "S" hose that attached with hose clamps on the early cars they attach differently to the tank/engine oil cooler. (Hope that makes sense to you....it's hard to explain through typing)

The refreshed motor and trans goes into the car this weekend....according to my mechanic. Then we will add the front oil cooler. After that hopefully it will be good to go.

A while back I posted these Rebuild pics

I don't have any recent pictures with the FI system installed yet (the car is in NC, I'm in MD)

This conversion has (of course) turned out to be more expensive than I thought it would be. I'm at around $6K at this point.

But it is my hope that a bigger motor in an early car will be fun to drive and from what I've heard it will be. Suspension upgrades to use the new horsepower will be next....

Chuck

Chris,

Severna park is right around the corner, we should meet up at some point when my car is ready. However I don't actually work on the CIS myself. For one I've never had to mess with it in my last 911 (78 targa) and secondly I always seem take my cars in for service. I have changed the oil once..but that, um turned into a disaster. I'm getting better though reading the books and this website!
