'87 G50 spline shaft adjustment?

I'm having a hard time shifting into second after a track day - a reputable source told me to adjust the spline connection between my shifter and transmission. See below - where exactly is that linkage? What is see is the coupling. Is it under the white insulation?

No, that's just the rod that goes to the shifter. It's insulated as a vibration relief measure. The coupling you see has no adjustment there, though there are are aftermarket solutions which replace the black rubber you see with a stiffer polyurethane; this will take some of the slop out of the system. JWest Engineering makes the Rennshift system that is very effective, and WEVO has a great solution, too. The entire coupling is attached to the shift input on the trans further to the right (inside a rubber boot between the car chassis and the trans). It could be that you are out of adjustment there. You will need to access under the car. It's tight in there. Do you have issues with 4th (similar position fore/aft)? If you do some searches here, you will find lots of good info about the whole system that affects shift quality, as it includes engine and transmission mounts, short and tighter shifters, and couplings. These are all means to give more direct input, and therefore feedback to the driver, and make the shift linkage more "direct". Of course, the trade-off is vibration and potential noise. You will have choose where you want to live on the curve. Good luck.

Lyle.

Yes I have a Rennshift installed in the cockpit. Thanks for the tip.

The G50 doesn't connect to the transmission with splines. It is attached with a single bolt that goes through the shiftrod protruding out of the transmission. There is no adjustment. The stepped shaft of the bolt aligns the connection. Either the bolt is tight or it isn't.

The JWest coupler gives the shift a WAY more positive feel. It also transmits more vibration so you will feel it in the shift knob.
Also there is a plastic bushing/cup in the shifter itself that can wear that reduces the accuracy and feel of the shifter. With the age of our cars this is a common item that may benefit from replacement.

+1 The instructions for the spline adjustment apply to the 915 transmission, not the G50.

Ok that's actually bad news, as that was something easy to check. Where is the bolted connection you refer to? Is it to the right on the picture as a previous poster said? Accessible under the car?

Quite worried now that I might be internal to the transmission. I had it professionally rebuilt 2 years ago with all steel synchros at significant expense. Would hate to have undone that.

Here is a pic.
I was replacing my trans mounts and the rear shifter boot (missing in this photo).

Yes, it's accessible under the car. It's to the right in your photo. You should feel/see a rubber boot/cover that cover the bolt as the link passes from inside to outside. Sorry I didn't take pictures when I installed coupler & short shift kit.
Good luck,
Terry

Ok thanks, I will check that. For those that are familiar with the J West, is there anything that I would need to check on the shifter?

I checked the Rennshift tonight - not much to adjust there. Tackling the aft connection next.

I'm surprised that you did not find the problem when you got into the center console to look at the bushings in the shifter assembly. As I stated in your other thread about this, I was willing to bet money that was your car's issue.

I'ts been years since I took my shifter apart, but isn't there some adjustment between the shifter and rod?

You can adjust the front shifter housing front/back as it's mounted to the center tunnel. You need to be sure it is essentially all the way back, so the shifter can go all the way back when you go for 2 / 4.

The shifter assembly is certainly adjustable, and by moving it back and to the left we were able to fix the problem. Must have gotten knocked out of alignment during the track day. Doesn't have to move much.
