Autothority MFS

I picked up a used Autothority Mass Flow for my 1984 911. Anyone have a manual for it? I am not getting any response from Autothority.

Thanks, Steve

I have a manual. I'm currently out of town but will be home on Friday. It's a pretty simple unit. You just need to check the ohms between a couple pins and install. At least that's what I did.

after you install you may want to dyno your car. The autoT chip has the air/fuel mixture on the rich side. See this thread for a/f that I had with the autoT chip.
More kudos for Steve W and dyno sheets

Funny you say that. I am already in discussions with Steve W since I don't trust that Autothority chip. I am pleased to see the HP gains on your charts. That's quite a significant boost! I am also running a bypass and after-market exhaust, so I expect to see similar gains.

Steve

I have an install manual that about 6 pages long. Talks about how to install the chip and other things. I'll try scanning it later tonight to see if it has what you need.

I just took my Autothority unit out and put the original back in. I heard that either Autothority isn't in business anymore or they don't support that product any longer. Either way, they never returned any emails I sent them either.

I knew the original owners and staff of Autothority which was here in my area. You are correct in that the "original Autothority" is no longer in business. The name, assets and rights were sold to another company some years ago and they do not support many of the old Autothority products which were very well engineered and thought out.

Hope that helps..

BTW, I'd like to get a copy of that manual as well.

Thanks,

Yup, the new owners couldn't care less about customer service.

I'm sure I have a set of instructions somewhere too. Al, Larry and Joel used my old '86 as their test mule for the development of the MAF and software. Even the early marketing photos were my engine compartment. I still have the original MAF in a box in my basement.

Of all things, my scanner just broke on me. All it gives me is a nice white picture. So I tried taking pictures with my camera. I tried leaving them high res hoping you might be able to glean some information, but they were over the limit to upload...so they are 20% smaller. Hopefully still readable. But this is all that came with my car...if there is a different manual, the PO didn't provide me with it. Hope it helps.

Oh man, that's too funny..
ok, I know Al pretty much retired and is still in the area..

Larry left a long time ago after Joel took over and went to a really good shop up in Chester, PA or Media station or something like that..

Joel.. well... finally sold.

Have you by chance heard from or know where Larry is? I'd just like to say hi.. feel free to PM me...

Kaliv Farstryder: Thanks for posting!

Can you post a pic of how the little connectors fit into the AFM connector? there is piccy on the photocopy and I am wondering how this works, do they snap in place etc?
It would really help me out!

Thanks!

Well, I don't have it in my car still, so I couldn't really show you. I was more concerned with taking it out than remember how to put it back in. I do know that there was an extra plug that was being used that I ripped out. The Autothority plugged into the big black plug, and the three little pins plugged into the stock plug, and then were wrapped with electrical tape. In fact, I didn't even know it was an adapter until I installed the original air filter and found out it didn't fit. I'm not sure if you have the same connector that was provided. Anyway, the pins were numbers so it easy to tell which ones they went into. The black cable looked to be a ground and was screwed to one of the...umm, thingamagig fuel system metal part?!?! Eh, it's ground so it doesn't matter. And then the red cable plugged into...hmm, I forget really. When I put the stock one on, it didn't use the plug and I currently have nothing going to it. I provided a pic of when I first got my car and you can sort of see the red wire...but I'm not sure what it's for. Anyway, what I'm getting to is that I had an adapter.

You guys are making me worry. I just bought this MAS thinking I could get an easy 20 hp and from what I am reading here, you guys have all un-installed these units.

Why?

Actually, that's one of my biggest questions. The red wire...where's it go. I admit, I haven't reviewed the photographed instructions yet...thanks for that. I also have a small "potentiameter" black-taped to my wiring...what's that for?

Kaliv! Thanks! Those instructions are invaluable!

But again...I am concerned why everyone seems to be moving away from this device? No HP gains? Or just concerns relating to originality? Or club-racing rules?

Steve

My car just gets me to work and back without my eyes glazing over in bordom. I loved the air filter and it's unique whistling sound. The last time I had in it the shop though, the technician said something was broken with it and that he couldn't adjust my idle...which I was having a big problem with. I had all the old original parts, so on my own I just stuck the original back in. Not sure if I noticed any hp decrease, but it does sound different and more quiet...sounds more tame I guess you could say. Not to mention the original takes up more space in the engine compartment. I suppose if Autothority was still supporting this unit I'd probably still be using it.

First, I ran mine until I sold that Carrerra back in the 90's. But after Al used my car to develop his software, we bolted my headers and sport muffler back on, then reran the dyno pulls. The MAF did make more power up top with the headers, though I frankly think it was more in the 15hp range. But again, that was at 5500-7000. Below 4000, the stock AFM made the same power. Later when I went with Euro compression P&C, and C2 cams, the MAF then began to pay for itself with the ability to flow better than stock. But on a stock engine with stock exhaust, my opinion has always been that it wasn't worth the $$.

Second, the MAF is not legal for PCA Club Race stock class which is why mine is still in a box.

Finally, the only way to tell what you think is to bolt it in and test it out.

Guys - thanks for posting all this info! Photos are a big help too.

If someone does have a clean scanned copy of the manual I'd love to get a copy for my records. Or mail it to me and I'll scan and post the files here (and return the manual).

My 89 carrera has an Autothority MAF that according to the PO records was installed about 10 years ago.

I've only driven it about 4k miles in my one year of ownership, but it has performed flawlessly in all seasons, and it starts and idles great.

It easily walks away from my friends 84' & 85 911s, both of which are ROW models (with similar HP to my 89 with it's OEM intake). All of our cars have cat bypass and sport mufflers. I'm really pleased with it's performance.

I had a Wong chip in my previous car, and spoke to him about one for this MAF system and will be putting one in this car, once I finish some suspension upgrades.

..
