Porsche Cayenne Battery linked to deaths in FL

I know this may be the wrong place to post but I just saw this local news story here in Orlando. Check this out...never knew a Cayenne engine battery is under the passenger seat?

Prolly on its 3rd battery. Defective altinator possibly cause over charging? My Audi 200 turbo Quattro had its battery under the passenger seat just like my old bug.

There is literally nowhere else to put a full-sized battery. The engine fills every inch of the engine compartment. I replaced the first one about 3 years ago without incident.

They used to put them under the back seat of VWs...

Nice knowing you too.

The news report I read said it wasn't the original battery, so it's possible that the vent hoses were left off at the last battery change. In my limited experience I have found battery vent tubes frequently not connected to the battery on cars I have worked on

I see them with all the typical issues that are also dangerous with having battery mounted somewhere else. Missing hold down clamp (in a wreck a battery jammed up into metal hood will cause a fire), vent tube to battery missing or not hooked up, the vent assembly that provides actual air to battery compartment not hooked up etc.

It's sad that these people died but one can learn from it. A rotten egg smell is not normal. No matter how slight it might seem.

i would imagine one of the issue is people not wanting to pay the big dollars stealerships want to charge you for oe battery so pick a " compatible" one up from a big box store. When they realize the vent line connection is not there or incompatible they leave it off.

I had a Bug, whenever I had some of my football team members in the back seat there would be a burning hair smell while driving around. Never put 2 and 2 together, the luck of youth.

Again with Bugs it was often owner error. People forgot or lost the black battery cover which protected the positive and negative battery terminals from shorting out on the rear seat springs. It was the horsehair you'd smell.

Very unfortunate result of not using manufacturers OE parts. I wonder if Porsche and dealers stress the importance of proper battery and battery installation?

Can't believe I'm saying this, but this may be warranted

You do not need a Porsche brand battery in a Cayenne. Many dealers install a "direct fit" equivalent battery. You do need to have some common sense about how things work to properly install one.

Batteries have been installed inside vehicles since almost forever. No lawsuit here. Or at least a successful one. I believe I read they had hydrogen sulfide on their urine so I suspect this was happening for some time and not just due only to the accident.

None of us know if the people that passed away were at a Porsche dealership service dept or even an independent and they were told that the battery has a problem. So for all we know, someone may have attempted to avoid this tragedy from happening.
Mercedes Benz also puts the battery in the subfloor under the pass seat in the R-Class, ML and GL as well.
