Well it's not even close to being original, seats, wheels, fiberglass, not steel spoiler, whale tail etc. Doesn't even mention the motor or real mileage so it would have to be real cheap to be worth the risk. Otherwise you would spend way to much to make it back into a real 67S and if you aren't looking for that then you might as well spend the money on a newer car.

I would sure like to. It would pain me to see an S with that crap on it, the same goes for soft window targas. This car as both attributes. I wonder how bad the rust really is and how it is mechanically. White also might not be the original color.

I suppose the key is whether the original engine survived the mayhem. That would be a miracle, but I may stop by and take a look later this week.

Curt ... only about $22K - $25K.

But, 'six carbs' sounds a lot more like a plain '65-'66 Solex engine than an original 'S' engine!

Anybody emailed the guy for more details?

Warren,

Based on those numbers, any thoughts I might have had to resurrect this car are history. $5K+ to purchase, then body and paint work - $10K+; almost certain engine rebuild (assuming it has the correct engine!) - $8K+; interior, wheels, etc., etc., etc. Then again, it does have the rare "6 carb" option. -- Curt

Only 20 soft window 911S Targa's were imported into the US, so it would be worth saving and restoring any such car. An exceptionally original low mileage red one with very cool red interior and houndstooth seats (see Paternie's 911 book) sold recently for upwards of 40K if I'm not mistaken. Still it would be a labor of love to restore this car and best left to an expert.

That's a great car Randy. I now realise it was what made me interested in this post in the first place, but I couldn't remember where I saw it. That car absolutely says "classic 911" to me in spades. Beautiful!
Anyone who puts those rear fender protector thingies on a car of this year and heritage should be arrested and charged with dangerous use of a 3M product.
Punishment? 20 years in a panel shop rubbing back Lada Niva front fenders.

This lo-res photo of a photo doesn't do the car justice, but you get the idea:

This is a special order 69S.

Emanuel? "but it is not an "S" The quote is from the ad. Whodathunk? One little letter could mean so much in later years. But it does.

That it isn't an S model explains why the car isn't worth forty grand, but the car is still in decent shape and pretty rare. It's got the S trim. Personally, with the jittery tail of the early cars, the 30 hp fewer has it's upside. Reviews of the early swb cars make them seem a little iffy. :-)

Not if you've ever driven a '67 'S' ... not iffy one bit! Great fun, and with current tires, plenty capable on any mountain road in the world! 2195 lbs - stock!!! That's half a ton less than a '78 3.3 Turbo!!!

Warren, do you read Thouroughbred and Classic Car? They've got an article on the first commonly available Turbos, and mention the 1976. What's funny is that the first turbo, with 260 hp, was slower than the Carrera 3.0 :-) Nice little reminder about weight:HP ratios, that.

As for the swb cars, nope I've never ridden in one. I don't think I've ever seen one in person, in fact. They're kind of thin on the ground, especially the soft-window targas. I've been watching that '67 for weeks now, hemming and hawing. I've been thinking of a 60s British convertible as a garage-mate to my RR, but nothing I see from the period is as fast and usable as a Porsche. They truly were among the first high-performance cars that were also daily drivable and user-maintainable. So a '67 targa might be nice.

Emanuel - Slower in terms of what performance measurement? 0-60, 0-100, or what? -- Curt

The only advantage the turbo has is top speed - 158 mph. The 0-60 was 5.6 v. 5.9 for the 3-liter turbo in the article. Then again, as they mention, the 930 has all the creature comforts of the standard 911 that the RS doesn't.
