Scam?

In Early 911 Registry I posted a wanted thread. It was for early Recaro or clone seats. I need a pair. One guy answered me by email (along with others), posting pics of a pair of very good original Recaros. Very good price too. I asked what his best price would be and then he lowered it by 15%. I thought "great!" and said I would take them.

Sent him an email tell him my address so that he could get a freight cost. He answered back that he needed a money transfer and gave me his bank info and no cost increase for freight!

That seemed odd. I hope I am wrong, but this seems off. I sent him an email stating that I only will purchase them thru paypal. It covers both the buyer and the seller if something goes south.

I am not going to post his name yet - I am waiting for a response.

I am just curious if anyone else got a email looking for seats.

thanks,
Mark

Mark try posting over on the parts for sale area. Little more accustom to dealing with buying and selling. I think you have reason for pause.

Might want to post on marketplace/classifieds to get traffic from guys who are more aware of the scams.

But your instincts match mine. Caveat emptor - Buyer beware.

I would be extremely cautious here. I've noticed an uptick of scammers floating around the forum with some really great deals lately.

Everyone has a digital camera today- ask for a unique photo with a specific note on the seats. My guess is that he'll slip back into the ether shortly thereafter.

I'd run. With a bank to bank transfer you're screwed.

Many scammers on this site and others. Low post numbers, poor grammar, gmail accounts, low prices, and excuses for no PayPal account. I've come across at least 10 scammers in the past couple months.

There is the "too good to be true" which clearly you have picked up on as you are asking our advice - that is good!

Best way to cut through this nonsense is to let them know you or your friend will be by to pick them up with cash in hand. If they falter on that, you have a scammer.

Yeah, For Sale forum would be best but that said...

Big population here. Very likely you can find someone here that is local to the seller which can change the dynamic a lot.

tell him you are taking a trip through his town and you can stop by and pay in cash and pick up the seats. if he is for real he will take you up on it.

I did that with a jeep I was selling. told people I ship cars for a living and can drop it off and do the deal in person. amazing how many people you never hear back from

Google image search is your friend. If you doubt the originality of any photo, just search the web for the picture. It'll find it.
