Tire Sizing ? (17X7.5 fronts on a narrow body Carrera)?

i have an 88 carrera which i am purchasing new tires for. i am currently running a 205/50/17 in the front on a fikse 7.5 inch wide rim. i'm currently looking at the kumho ecsta mxs but they come in a 215/40 a 215/45 and a 225/45. i think that i would like to add more tread to the front to balance things out a bit to decrease understeer. i'm not sure about the tolerances at play within the fenderwell and to further complicate things, i'm still hashing out the problem i have been having with scraping on hard right hand turns (on the 205/50/17s). (inside fender lip is almost completely rolled although i may be going back for seconds in order to confirm that the inner fender lip is not the culprit). i will probably be investigating camber plates or modifying the tops of the shock housing in order to attempt to pick up some more negative camber (my car when maxed out is 0.4 degrees more on one side than another) which will hopefully alleviate my problems. in light of this, what sizes would work for my application assuming i get the suspension sorted?

the diameters are as follows:
current Bridgestone s-02 as per tire rack
205/50ZR17 section width 8.3" overall diameter 25.2"

Kumho MX data from tire rack
215/40YR17 section width 8.7" overall diameter 23.9"
215/45YR17 section width 8.5" overall diameter 24.7"
225/45YR17 section width 8.9"overall diameter 25.1"

can someone help me out here?
am i on the right track as far as camber plates or strut tower modification for the negative camber?
thanks for all the help in advance.

david

can only tell you David that on my 78SC I fitted Kumho Ecstas at 17x7.5 and 17x9 and they have been a big improvement over stock......with no fouling ...can't imagine the 88 shell is more restrictive

I have 7,5x17 with Dunlop SP9000 215/45x17 on my Carrera 3,2. No problems at all. Oddly enough my problems were at the rear with 245/40x17 on 9x17. Negative camber solved that problem.

wheel fitments for '77 with 930 flares

I'm trying to get a set of wheels for my '77 911 widebody project. Can anyone tell me the correct fitments for a set wheels once I get the flares installed without relying upon spacers?

Also, I'm thinking of getting 17" rims, but I'm not certain what widths to get for the front and rear. Should I go with 17x7s and 17x8s? How about 17x8s and 17x9s?

Should I even go to 17"? A friend said I should go to 16" since it would be cheaper in buying a set of tires and they provide a more comfortable ride? Another friend told me to go to 18", since everyone seems to be upgrading to 18".

Your assistance in this matter would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

There are several pieces of info I would want in order to have an opinion
  • What make & size rear tires
  • What is the o/s of the front wheels
  • Where exactly on the lip is the rubbing in turns, 9 o'clock,12 o'clock etc.
  • How much rubbing?

If you 7.5 Fikse wheels are anything like mine the 225/45 Kuhmo Estacia MX will fit. At least those are the ones I have in my garage. I actually wish I would have went with the 8" Fikse because with the negative camber there is plenty of room for the 8's. I run 1.25 degrees of negative camber.
