Marine-Style Hatch Spring for Decklid

In Jury's "R / Outlaw project..." he used this amazingly simple marine hatch type spring for his decklid. Serious weight savings and a super trick idea in my opinion. I searched for these and found they come in a ton of different lengths, etc.

I contacted Jury to ask him what length and diameter he used, but no response. Has anyone else used this setup? I think it will hold up a glass ducktail decklid just fine, and if not, I will do one on each side...

Any ideas here? They come in roughly 8,9,10 and 11". Too long won't work, and too short won't work. They are rather cheap, just don't wanna buy the wrong stuff...

I got rid of the stock hinges, doing the R hinges, so need some way of propping open since the hydro units operate off the stock hinges. I can't find any better solution than this.

Has anyone ever look at using the 356 hinges? You open and it locks and then lift a little to release? They have a star/gear mechanism. I have searched but not found anything. It would get rid of the need for the heavy/useless shocks.

This is a diagram. When you lift the hood or lid, the 3 point star catches and holds in the open position. To close, you lift slightly and it will dis-engage the star so you can lower it.

My guess is they changed from this as too many people tried to force the lid down without understanding how it works, bending lots of lids.

The 911 R lid is designed to lay flat against the rear window so it's completely out of the way. Why the need for anything? I have them on my 68R, I carefully lay back the lid, haven't had any scratches. sometimes I will lay a rag down if I'm working on the car for an extended time. I find it really convenient to have open access to the engine bay.

I do think it's a cool idea for someone with stock hinges however, I might just steal that idea for the aluminum lid on my ST

2nd gen corvettes have the same hood prop. Look it up that way. It might be cheaper. It is a Chevy after all.

I believe c4 uses the same type also.

Had one in the frunk but would get immersed in what I was doing and bump it then the hood would crash down. After the third time, it went. Hopefully you will have better awareness and less knots on your head.

I'm thinking of one for each side for this very reason.

I'm not sure what we're doing here? What problem are we trying to solve?

The beauty of the R style hinges is that you can simply flip the deck lip totally out of the way. Why would we want to change that?
