Almost sounds like you're already running the latter (euro bosch h4s) -- on the former (sugar scoop assemblies), the sealed beam headlight assembly would remove as a single piece (lens, reflector and bulb -- which is permanently affixed to the reflector) and you'd replace that assembly with the sealed beam h4 you just picked up.

On the latter, euro bosch h4, the bulb would fit into the reflector, which would also separate from the lens.

Thanks darrin.
My set up is indeed like the second link you posted. My reflectors are kind trashed...pitted in some spots...that's why I was hoping to replace the set up.
There are no relays installed either so I'm not quite sure how to proceed.

Sounds like you have the Bosch H-4's already. You can get the reflectors re-silivered.

Thanks Harry. I guess I'll just install the new seals and relays and return the sealed beams. Hopefully the relays will help with light output, if not I'll try new bulbs.

Hey Mickey,

Don't feel like a DB for asking, this crap is confusing. I feel the same way.

Be sure to check out Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply
This guy makes a lot of sense. The page above should take you to the section on wiring and relays.

Mickey,

Remember. no dumb questions.

Do the inexpensive stuff first and decide where you need to go. You may also want to replace the headlight connectors. Daniel Stern can help you with this.

I love my Hella H4 E-Codes with LEDs. The downside is something only someone who regularly takes their car snowboarding like me would encounter.... The LEDs don't heat up the lenses like Halogens or Xenons, so snow and ice collects on them when driving in freezing precipitation.. This is why we went with Xenon in my wife's Excursion as it gets driven a lot in bad weather. I may installing some headlight washers to overcome this. #coldweatherporscheownershipproblems.

After giving my headlights a good look I think they're useable for a while. They need freshening up with properly functioning adjusters...new seals and gaskets...and after reading the link Puma posted (thanks, Puma) I'm thinking the relays will help with getting more juice to the headlights, so I 'should' be good. I'm waiting on parts now. BTW, I'm sitting on a set of brand new Hella 7" sealed beams if anyone is in the market ;)

+1 for no dumb questions lots of great info here. Thanks for getting it rolling. I am not near needing headlights yet but since I have only one sealed beam I think I could buy you out of the H4s. Sounds a direct replacement for the sealed beams. Pm me if you still got them.

Thanks

Don
