Ducktail questions
Just saw a thread on the 911 parts portion of the site on Ducktails.
I purchased one from a friend last year and plan to spray and fit it in the spring to an SC. What are the differences, if ANY ? I have no idea about these lids and don't really know what I have here. That thread seemed to have some different opinions. Hoping someone can give me a clue here, thanks ! |

No differences. I have a Getty Design one on my SC and after an initial bit of adjustment it fits great. Engine compartments had the same measurements from the early 70s to late 80s, so do it. Not all duck tails are created equal though. There are some great fiberglass shops and some crap. It depends on if it is a Getty, TRE, or what.
Go Cubs!

You will want to fit the lid on the car befor painting it just in case it needs any trimming, sanding ect.

the fitting is very important.
When we restored my RS we had to rework the decklid extensively to make it fit perfectly. This is an original factory RS decklid with steel base and fiberglass burzel. We had to build up one side with resin and glass to get the gap down to where it should be. This is an important step so that the job comes out well. Also prime the decklid well and sand it extensively. You want a good thickness of epoxy primer that is well finished. Fiberglass ages and continues to cure for years ........really forever. My decklid is over 40 years old and after days of work and proper finishing 8 years ago during restoration it is now showing a little waviness and that normal fiberglass look. So you can conclude that even the factory ones age for their whole lifetime. That is the nature of the beast.

Unless it has a metal base, in which case it is a different animal
