1987 carrera checking rear wheel bearings?
What is the method of checking rear wheel bearings condition without pulling them. 96k on car and going to be doing a lot of touring. No excessive noise or symtoms at this time. Thanks

Find a road with a burm, drive up and down the side slowly, keeping the car parallel to the burm.
If bearings are shot, you will hear a "clunk", as this method will put severe stress on the bearings which will verify failing or failed bearing. For the driverside, make sure road is safe not traffic and do the same. The other way would be a an abrupt turn from stop, does not always work as level of stress may vary depending on how much load you put on the bearings.

Jack up the rear of the car, and push/pull the rear wheel at 12 and 6, and then again at 9 and 3. There should be no play.

^^^, that is a definite way but by that time it will be pretty obvious bearing is gone and you would get a constant whirling sound at the rear/s.
When they start going bad, it will not move when car is raised. Ask me how I know.
