Question Radar Detector Mounting - Front Grille??

I'm toying with the idea of gutting my existing radar detector and installing the sensor pod in the front grille (at the top of the hood, below the scuttle), leaving the guts of it (with LEDs etc) in the ashtray.

I am also thinking about putting a small piece of clear perspex in front of it to protect the pod/sensors from the weather. Has anyone tried this?

My thoughts are that it might be too low to be effective at range.

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

One of the functions of the cases in higher end detectors is to sheild the detector from external radio interference. If you disassemble the detector, chances are it will not work properly.

Instead I would invest in a system that's designed to have remote sensors. I think K40 makes one that is pretty good. Still , no substitute for a Valentine.

You have the right idea that detectors mounted low are much less effective. Radar is SOMEWHAT like of sight. THe higher the detector is mounted, the farther it can "see". THink about it -- If you were looking for a radar trap up the road, would you lay low to the ground by your grill, or would you stand up and look out on the horizon?'

THe V1 mounted on the visor or at the top of the windsheild is still the best deal in town... Talk to those who make a habit of driving fast on public roads, there is no substitute.

I am only considering it as I have a new one coming and was wondering what to do with the old one. An electrical engineer friend suggested it and I thought he was a little off-base with his theory, but he was very confident that it'd work well.

I should probably sell the old one here and keep the detector next to my rear-view mirror.

Just a thought for the techies..would running a line from the antenna with a signal amplifier increase it's effectiveness?

I'd ask Valentine at their site.. good question.. but I did ask them how to hook up a one channel amp to the audio.. and I'd like a little more reflective coverage thru mountain twisties.. I gotta slam on the brakes when the V-1 sings in such areas.. like 2 seconds before the bear comes around the curve heading in opposite direction.............Ron
