Just got the new Excellence in the mail yesterday. As an owner of an early car I was drawn to the 72 coupe on the cover. Turns out a nice article on Randy's car. Beautiful. I liked how the project took shape while utilizing the rules for solo racing.
I will have to use this as motivation for the coupe project that is (slowly) taking place. Jamie ------------------ Jamie 71 911T targa http://www4.ncsu.edu/~jpnovak |

I won't get the mag in the mail for a couple of weeks up here, but if you're talking about Randy Wells' car....yes, it's a nice piece of craftsmanship!

Randy is a great guy. I am fortunate to be able to autocross with him (I'm glad he is in a different class). Not only is it a learning experience to watch him drive, but he has been very willing to answer all my questions for my project car, another early 911 about to get an engine transplant.
Thanx Randy, and congrats! |

Hmmmmm... I haven't gotten mine yet. Maybe it's at home waiting for me. Great job Randy! I believe the photos are all done by Randy himself, if I'm not mistaken. I better rush home and see if it's here yet.

Thanks for your kind words, guys! I must say that Dan, Doug, and Tyson are NW autocrossing buddies of mine and are fine drivers in their own right. The November issue of Excellence has not arrived to me yet, but I have seen the text and know what the first spead looks like. My wife, who is also a full time photographer, helped with some of the photography while I was driving. It was a blast photographing my own car - I discovered things about it I never would have otherwise. Can't wait to see what image they used on the cover - can anyone describe it? For those who have not seen it, here's a photo of my car at SCCA Solo2 Nationals in Topeka, Kansas last week where both my co-driver and I trophied.

I was thisclose to being helpful! I've got my camera and laptop with me, but I forgot my copy of Excellence. I grabbed Grassroots Motorsports and Classic and Sports Car instead. I did enjoy the article on Randy's car, though. I loved the "Do you think my wife might read this?" line. Everyone may bash nostatic, but it's rare to find a guy in a car mag that's willing to say what he spent on his hobby anywhere if it might get back to his spouse.

HMM the November cover shot. Looks like a front drivers 1/4 view. The picture is awesome due to the setting(rising?) sun that casts a slight orange hue over the white car. Very cool!. Its a much better picture than that red 996 cab. Granted its the main story but the cars are too common.

NO EXCELLENCE in my Oregon mailbox yet. Sheesh, this is kind of like taping a game, avoiding radio all day...and just before you roll the tape, a friend phones, spills the final score....

A friend who draws cartoons for the oldest girlie mag once told me that many magazines printed and mailed in the midwest...not necessarily near the publishing offices. GUess that explains why he in Omaha often gets EXCELLENCE up to 10 days before I do in Oregon.

I'll be looking for my Excellence. I've admired Randy's car since I first saw it last year at autocross. My favorite part of Randy's car is the sound. Sounds like a cross between a 911 and a Hemi Cuda.
Congratulations, Randy! |

Heh, nice job, Randy. This is a cool issue for me since I have two people I know in it - you, and another local guy who was quoted in the Rennsport Reunion article (Jim Foster).
