'84 3.2 with SSI
When SSI's are installed on a 3.2 with a Motronic system, what happens with the O2 sensor?
I'm in the market for a muffler and cat bypass for my '84 but thought I'd wait until I have some funds for SSI' s as well. |

SSI's are available with O2 sensor bungs (or you can add them to SSI's without the bung).

I wonder what he uses for reference to maintain air fuel ratio.

Yes, you can run with an O2 sensor reading just one bank, or you can run with it disconnected. If not connected, always open loop, the ECU applies predesignated fuel instructions, just as it does in other open loop conditions, even with O2 sensor connected. Typically it will run a little richer. Maybe better too.
Good luck, Dave

Consensus seems to be that ssi headers are undersized for a 3.2 and don't really provide improvement over the stock exhaust with a cat bypass/premuffler. SSIs will also require some fiddling to adapt to the carrier's heater system.

I'm on the fence about the SSI's. Reasons to do it would be that my HE's are +30 yrs old, weight savings and sound. I'm not 100% sure they're worth it

SSI's are about $1500. You will need a new muffler, and for heat, you will need some additional parts. Search heat backdate. The SSI's are a 1972 replica, roughly. They do sound louder and more robust in general. They eliminate the cat, and may cause emission test problems. I have them. If I had good stock components, I would keep them and replace bad with good salvage off ebay.
Good luck, Dave
