WA state resident needs help and advice

Hello all,

I'm obviously a newbie to the forum but have owned my share of 911's that being said I have opportunity to reacquire a 1974 911 Targa that I original owned over 17 years ago but it's been sitting in a garage undriven.....ever since! The car is rust free and the paint is still amazing but obviously it not being moved in all these years has me worried. I would be trading my 68 stang title for title roughly 8k value, considering the engine work the car may need am I making the right decision? I would like to know of any WA state mechanic that would rebuild the 2.7 and trans Paul Weir style.

Thanks
Jr

The only real problem is the fuel system sitting with dead gas all that time. Probably needs a new tank, injectors cleaned and possibly a fuel distributor. Should run as well as when it was parked when that's done. The brakes should be frozen and rusted by now.

As the owner of pretty much exactly the same car I can speak to some of it's possible "issues"
Firstly is the car an S and -or did it have the front oil cooler installed?
Either way I'd advise to get rid of the AC. If it gets hot, pop the top.
Do everything John Walker recommends. I would seriously consider putting it on a trailer and taking it to him as it sits to get a thorough evaluation.

Then, dig through records to see if it's had any engine work done - specifically head stud inserts.
If not you may be okay, but you also may be in for a complete tear down. If so, there are a number of improvements you can do at the same time, such as tensioners, and so on.

Then, as said, brakes will be frozen. All the rubber parts in brakes and suspension will be suspect, if not outright rotten. Change them all and your car will drive and stop like new.

Keep us posted. The '74 is the best of the mid-year cars.

I'm not aware of any air-cooled Porsche specialists in Eastern WA. (Granted, it's been a while since I lived over there, and maybe somebody has opened a shop, but I don't know of any.)

I think your best bet is getting the car over to Seattle or Portland area (lots of good shops in both places). You're already talking with solid individuals (John and Al).

I agree with Charles that '74 is the best year of the middies. I've got a '75 Targa that required lots of work (and am still trying to get it sorted). They're fun cars!

I'd go through the brakes and fuel system and then see about bringing the motor back to life before passing judgement on the need for strip-down and rebuild (unless you've got knowledge that things aren't right).

John Walker is The Man.
There are two authorities on Porsches in the Pacific Northwest: John Walker in Seattle and Steve Weiner in Portland.

John Walker has been one of our better sources of information on issues with these cars and issues with changing replacement parts. When something pops up he shares it here so we can all learn.
Off the top of my head my three favorites:
- Replacement flywheel with a stainless reference pin so the crank sensor can't see it. (How do you even figure that out?)
- Fun with replacement coils. (Yeah, they are pretty much bad...)
- Undersized Sachs replacement clutch disks.

If you are trading it straight up for a car that you value at $8,000, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

The info on the car that you provide is limited. It seems to be a re-paint in an non-original color and has a lot of non-original parts on it but i can't see it being worth less than $8k.

Ship it to John Walker and have him go through it.

Well I actually value the mustang at around 14k but I'm only into it 8k, figured the Porsche was worth that.

Is it running? If so let us know what it took to get it going.
