some electrical questions
I dropped my under dash cover today as I am replacing the 90's radio and sub woofer with a vintage sounds stereo that looks perfect for my 76 targa.
Of course with older cars, once I dropped this cover I found a few iffy repairs that I have made right. I did come across 2 wires under the ash tray area that have factory 90 degree connectors that was hanging free; can anyone tell me what these wires are for? I also found a rubber boot with a bulb in it (which I think goes to the ashtray light) and another single bulb socket slightly farther downstream of the first ; both were just hanging free as well; can anyone enlighten me on where the lights should terminate? And third and finally, here is a photo of my radio antenna. It has no obvious way to pull it up, so I am thinking that it is a power aerial; how can I confirm that it is? Is there a spot where I can see the whole mast assembly to tell if it is power or not? There was no power antenna wire connected to the old stereo, but that doesn't mean anything; maybe the previous owner didn't hook it up or care. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Your antenna may be a manual one which operates with a special "key" to pull it out the first inch or two. A flat blade screwdriver may accomplish the same task.
Woodyscustomshop.com sells 12 or so different antennas for our cars and can probably tell you which key you need from a photo. If it's a Bosch Blue Tip, the spare key is about $10.

The 2nd one looks like the socket for the ash tray light. The bulb holder with the bulb in it might be from one of the four that illuminate the HVAC controls.

ericbash; with the antenna key, do they lock down? Meaning do you have to turn the top of the antenna with the key to release it, or does the key just kind of wedge in the top so you can pull it straight up out of the mast?

Hey fireguy, the angle connectors - are those under your dash? I feel like I've seen those but I couldn't find them under my dash.

On my car the key just provides a little leverage for lifting the antenna end, no turning required.
