A sill question, how do you remove the headlight knob on a 86?

I don't want to break it and I have done several searches that talk about removing the switch but assume you know how to remove the knob I guess. I got the Rennline replacement and it offered no clues.

Thanks

It should be threaded, no? Unscrew to take off - on my 1985.

I just went through that and here is what you need to do:
- Disconnect the battery
- With a really thin screwdriver work your way around the rubber and
gently pry the headlight logo cap from it, it is about 2mm deep, so don't force just the faceplate or you will break it, go behind it. Once removed you will see the nut that holds the "handle" to the actual switch.
- Pull the handle as if you were tuning on the lights; grab and hold the shaft with a thin visegrip so you don't damage the expensive switch (around $500 or so ) and remove the nut using a 10mm socket.
As many manuals say "Installation is reverse of removal"

First, thank you.

Second, LOL, Germans love to complicate the crap out of things. The Fog light switch took 3 seconds but noooooo.

I just ordered the Rennline billet knobs too for my 81SC. Headlight, rear defrost and fog lights.

How did the Fog come off? For my reference.

Thanks,
Chris

Instead of visegripping the switch shaft, observe the hole through the shaft and stick an awl in there to keep it from turning.

If you get stuck
Headlight switch removal. Won't move. Unable to push it back into the dash.

Thanks everyone. I pulled off the cap, removed the retaining bolt and spun the new one on....it took longer to guess which position to start the spin so it would end up level than anything else. On my car it was the 5 o clock position.

The fog light just pulls off.

Rennline was weird about the whole thing, I ordered them when they debuted, apparently they sent out the wrong ones ( different mm) and sent me another batch which worked but they came with shafts I did not need.

They look good. I gave up the lighted fog light button but that's ok.
