Did I get Fuched?

Howdy Pelicans,

I just had a nasty surprise this morning. I was looking at my tires closely and noticed that they are 15". That seemed strange as I remembered having the 395 option code under the hood; 16 X 6-7 Fuchs. (I've owned the car for two months, still discovering stuff...)

So I removed a wheel and here's what I found. Nockoffs?

There are three inscriptions

MAXWHEEL
LOAD 1000 lb
15X8

Fuched?

They are fakes. So if you bought the car expecting genuine Fuchs, then yes - you were fuched.

Once you wear out the current tires (if their date codes are fairly recent), these would be nice wheels for winter/snow tires

Looking on the bright side, 16x7 front and 16x8 rear fuchs fill out wheel wells a lot better than the 16x6 and 16x7 combo listed on the option code.

Where does 16x7 and x8 come into play for the OP?

It didn't, but as a new owner/member/poster that may well be looking at rectifying the situation, it seemed worth mentioning to the OP-- especially since I don't believe that a 16x7 rear would fill the rear wheel wells like a 911 offset 15x8 would.

Would be unfortunate for the OP to pick up a set of 16x6 and 16x7 wheels only to find that they didn't leave him with the look/etc. he had or was looking for (i.e. don't want him to be "Doubley Fuched")

MAXWHEEL is not a brand, but part of the wheel load description spread across two petals:

MAX WHEEL LOAD 1500

This makes me think these might be American Eagle replicas, as those are the only reps that I can recall seeing that disclaimer on.

Well I'm done crying now...

Would 16x9 rear and 8 front be a little much? I found a set of 4 for $5600CAD ($4200USD) with new potenzas Re-11s

unless you have a widbody/turbo look, you'll have a HARD TIME fitting 911 offset 16x8 wheels up front (many folks with non-wide body 911s - including me - needed to roll their front inner fender lips for clearance when running stock 205/55-16 tires on 16x7 fuchs) -- further, the 245/45-16 tire size required for the 16x9 rears is currently only available in potenza RE-11s -- which are great tires, but significantly limits availability. 16x8 fuchs work with the more common 225/50-16 tire size.

further, since 16x8 and 16x9 fuchs are both relatively scare "unicorn" sizes, you may well find yourself doing a lot better $$$-wise going with 16x7 (very common as rear wheels) up front and 16x8 (or 16x9) on the rear.

Another option (ironically) is to consider the new variety of fake fuchs in 17" diameters.

Thanks Darrin, that clears things up. I'll go with 7s and 8s

Alex, lets see a pic of the car. Not many Carrera's running around the remote corners of BC. I'm betting not ideal driving conditions in Golden this time of year either.

Mark.

One vote for leaving them until the rest of the car is sorted.
Just enjoy the car. Give it a week and you'll get over this.

Or you can get new replicas in 16 or 17 for $180/ea

Mark.
Hi Mark, I just bought the car from a widow in Vernon. The car spent its whole life in the okanagan. It still has a good four months to go before it touches asphalt. I don't have good pictures but the car is sound. I'll take some good ones in the spring.

Agreed, no rush. I think I might polish, paint these in the mean time. It might be good practice for when I buy the real deal.

Alex

Another thought. Don't over look the thought of reverting back to original '84 spec of 16x6 & 7 rather than going for 7 & 8. Those fit great, and with a pair of 1" spacers on the rear fill the flares well. Generally a lot cheaper than the wider sizes too.

The narrower wheels are a better fit up front, and can look good in back with spacers. And far more affordable. Here's an example. No affiliation.

16" Fuchs 6s & 7s 911 Fitment $1100

another option -- 16x7 all around -- running the 16x7 up front (without spacers) will fill out the front wheel well and the 16x7 rear with spacers will fill out the rear.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds for used pairs and have them all refinished as a set
