What causes this trim piece to scrunch up?

I've been eyeballing this SC on ebay ending shortly and was curious to know

A) what is the technical term for this black accordion trim piece

and

B) what would cause one side of the car to look factory perfect while the other side looks out of sorts?

The accordion on the left side is installed wrong. It may also have been hit on that side and collapesed the tube a little bit.

The bottom is supposed to be installed behind the valance. It might be missing it's wire reinforcement, too. Hard to say from the front side...

The fit to the bumper end is also off, no idea why. Hopefully its a left side accordion... and not a right.

same look

mine had the same appearance ...four bolts on the back side hold it on the car and I took it off and compared to the other side ... I thought it was upside down and by comparison it is cut and will only fit either right or left I worked it with a soft blow hammer and some other bench tools and got it close ...the material is a lot harder than it looks and it took a few tries to get it better than it was ...fit man .. fix it

this is prior to the repair I would love to show you the results of the repair but another motor drop and gear box issue in process

Yes, I too was watching that auction all day (and last couple days). Almost pulled the trigger. Glad it closed above my budget. (that way I don't feel too bad)
I was also wondering about that bellows. I kept looking at the front shots, and the opposite side shots. But bumper looked straight and level
