Stupid Question on tranaxle flange bolt torque

I just replaced the thin gaskets on my inner CV joints, the ones that stop the grease flying out if you dont have them in (as was the condition from the PO). When I came to torque the 4 bolts through the transaxle flanges I am trying to determine if I am torquing 8mm or 10mm bolts. They are hex head bolts taking an 8mm allen wrench. Does that mean they are 8mm bolts. I didnt think about until afterward when I read a previoud post on these bolts. The basic question is ; Is the size determined by the head

The basic answer is...no. The bolt size is determined by the diameter of the bolt (and, of course, it's length). Your '69 should have 4-bolt flanges with, I believe, two holes for pins which help align and strengthen the connection. The correct size should be 10mm bolts, I'm sorry I don't know the proper length, I think it depends on the thickness of the flange on the axle's CV joint. Hope this helps, Jerry M '78 SC | ||
