Engine rebuild question?

My Bentley manual tells me I need to discard my engine oil cooler after a bearing failed. Is this necessary? How can metal get to the cooler since it must first pass through the oil filter.

Thanks,

Tim

I can't answer your question with first-hand knowledge, but I have heard of several persons buying and installing used oil coolers coolers. They found out the hard way that the cooler came from a blown motor, and bits of metal had made their way into the cooler and into their motor. The result varied, but the result can be devistating.

It seems like cheap insurance to replace the oil cooler, or at the very least have it gone over with a fine tooth comb. You don't wantto invest $$$ in a rebuilt only to have relatively inexpensive part thwart your efforts.

Just my .02.

Where can I get one of these for under $1000?

You were quoted $1000+ for an oil cooler? Please describe.

Oil coolers can be cleaned ultrasonically. Sill not a guarantee, but if done correctly, should be okay. I'd say this is a must before mounting any used cooler in an engine.

These guys ultrasonically cleaned mine.
I think it was about $75 per cooler. Very nice to do business with. They deal mostly with small aircraft oil coolers.

Note: If you get a used oil cooler be sure to have it checked for leaks. The engine cooler I sent to Pacific was found to leak, the one I have on my engine now seems to leak and I know of two others that leaked.
