944 turbo brakes on 911?
l know this topic has been brought up before, and l`ve heard the negative opinions, but l`ve never heard from someone who has actually done it. As l know it the 968/944T calipers will fit the 911 in the front if the mounting holes on the caliper are elongated. The rears present a more complicated obstacle, but l think reworking the caliper by filling the mounting holes and redrilling/machining will work to mount them, plus using 930 rotors 309mm/24mm ..l think...but l don`t know.l realize the front carrera rotors(my car is an 84) are a wee bit thin for all that squeeze, but what thicker rotor can l use?l`ve heard that it`s a bad idea because the stock 911 rotors are too thin,so what meatier rotor will work? An 86 944turbo? Does anyone know, FIRSTHAND, about any of this?Lets clear up this urban garage myth once and for all.And please don`t tell me to buy a big red conversion...

So many questions. I'll give you a few opinions before Bill jumps in and gives you his expertise. First off, what are you after? Heavy track use? Having brake fade? Excessive pad wear of rotor warpage? If none of the above, consider retaining your old system. The upgrades you speak off must be considered as a 4 wheel system and not just a specific area, (Like just the fronts). The first area your car needs is thicker rotors. As far as I now, you have 2 choices, Turbo rotors or Brembo rotors. Any caliper addition without larger rotors will actually hamper your systems performance, usually by quickly warping rotors from excessive heat production. Now that you have bigger rotors, you choices are turbo calipers, brembo calipers, and other various ones from 928's 944 T's and possible C2's. It seems the easiest to fit, at least the rears are modified turbos. The fronts need adaptors (hats) that can fit your car. I'm sure you'll have more questions, Bill can answer the details of the more detailed issues hopefully soon.

Q: Can 944 Turbo front calipers be used on the front of a 911?
Data point 1: 944T front calipers from a an '88 Turbo S or '89 have same brake pad and piston sizes (44/36) as 993 or 928S4 front calipers. Data point 2: I used 951S adapters to mount 928S4 calipers on my 944S2. Data point 3: I used 928S4 caliper adapters to mount 993 calipers on my '86 911. Data point 4: '86-88 (non S) 944 Turbo used a smaller caliper. If you're talking about the larger/later 944T calipers you would be talking about an "S4" upgrade. The smaller calipers would probabably be no better than stock Carrera ('84-89) brakes and probably worse. The S4 front calipers will fit under a 944T Fuch wheel but not a 911 Fuch in my experience. -Chris |

hmmm, nice conversion Marc. Any signs of the legendary warped rotor/boiling fluid syndrome using the carrera rotors with the boxter calipers? l`ve got new drilled rotors, ate fluid ,no backing plates and 17`s. ln addition to that l happen to have a full set of 4 piston brembo calipers that came stock on the 944T/968.They`re probably quite close to the Boxter caliper in spec.l also have access to machine shop equipment. Now if anyone has actually already done this mod, maybe l could benefit from that experience..... lf l go it alone l`ll be sure to post my findings though.

The lite wt race car by Jim Calzia used this setup -- there's an article on it a year or 2 ago in Excellence. Vehiclecraft or someone on the web has a kit to make these calipers (964) mount. Google them up and see what they charge.

Bill Gregory, Bill Verburg, and Steve Weiner recently responded to that very question over on Rennlist. Here is a link to their response . With a unanimous negative response like that how can you want more(I notice that you responded there as well). VCI does have a kit but it is not cheap. You might as well do as most others have and use 930 all around or one of the brembo kits. Marcs link is to one of Bill Verburgs very comprehensive brake pages, browse through them it is worth it. I would take his advise. he does not sell anything but does give good solid advice. Included are links to quite a few vendors of the various kits, parts and services. Bill Gregory has numerous tech articles mostly at Rennlist and is also a good source of unbiased information and advice. Steve Weiner while a vendor has been an invaluable source of unbiased advice.
