Will Harness Bar Work With SC Seats?
I have some pretty nice Simpson harnesses I wouldn't mind installing in my '78 SC and I've been looking at bolt-in harness bars, BUT... It looks to me that the SC seatbacks may be too broad at shoulder level for the harness straps to be correctly positioned. I've found lots of pictures of 911's with race seats and even some with early low back seats using harness bars, but nothing with SC comfort or sport seats. Anyone know if harnesses will work with the high back seats?

Not a good idea for a couple of reasons. As mentioned the high back seats should not be used with harnesses.
Not a good idea to use harnesses on the street. Race harnesses should only be used with seats that are designed for them (race seats) and with either a roll bar or cage, with a helmet. At any rate race harnesses are not comfortable or practicable. Try reaching in the glove box while wearing race harnesses.

When I bought my SC it had a harness on a rollbar and the stock SC comfort seats. It did not work well because the shoulder straps landed on the outside of my shoulders (over my deltoids) due to the shape of the seat.

Thanks guys, will take your advice and leave well enough alone. Nice not to have to learn EVERYTHING the hard way!

Good decision, what can be fitted is often not the same as what should be fitted. For safety sake all sanctioning bodies that I know of require that the shoulder harness pass through holes in the seat, additionally there are specs defining and constraining the spread at the bar which varies w/ the distance of the bar from the shoulder.

Point taken, and my SC belts will remain as they are. I use Simpson (and similar) 3" latch and link lap belts in my English cars, but none have roll bars and thus no shoulder harnesses. What got me thinking about it on the SC is the annoying way the belt side latch tucks in between the side of the seat and the door when released, making it difficult to put the belt on unless I remember to do it before closing the door. Am I missing a part or something? The rest of the car is so nicely designed, it's hard to believe this got by Porsche.

Cpcooper, understand your observation. Where else can you - would you - locate the seatbelt receiver? The belt itself has to be located in the "B" piller (for strength & adjustability)... the latch (receiver) is in a tight spot, but where else can it go?
I too, have to remember to pull the belt before closing the door. It's just one of those "quirks" that make our cars so unique. Not saying your observation is off target - there just ain't much room in the cabin.
