Any tips for adjusting shift coupler?
 

I just replaced the shift coupler along with the Ball Cup Shift Bushing at the base of shift lever and the Shift Rod Bushing in Tunnel Behind Shifter on my 1983 911 SC.

Now I need to adjust shift coupler. Any practical tips on this adjustment?

Follow the instructions of the shop manual.

I suspect that they might be different for the 915 transmission then they are for the 901 in my car, so I'm not going to offer specifics. Doing it any other way will not work -- trust me. As in most things with the 911, diligently follow the manual and it will work. Variations -- less so.

Remove the shifter boot to get a visual of what you are dealing with. Remove passenger side seat, it will help allot to adjust and a helper to hold the shifter in place as you tighten

Put in neutral, loose the coupler, move the shifter to the left and the coupler to the right.
Tight the coupler and should be there.
At least every time I do it that way works.

I also had to replace the set screw..after I did the coupler

It is a bit tricky. Mine has just one small sweet spot to be just right. I have the fancier aftermarket coupler that has no slop at all like the factory coupler does. Spend time to get it "dead nuts" on.

Here's a tip, Search, there are probably 500 or more posts on this procedure. Not trying to be a jerk, but it amazes me how some do not use that function which works great!

I followed the manual to the letter but the adjustment was off.

I think the defined process steps would work great *if* there was no wear anywhere in the system.

I simply made small adjustments based on feel and crept up on the sweet spot.
