911 Bible
Hello! I am new in the forum and I am looking to learn more about the 911 and Porsches in general. I come from the Pelican Mercedes forums (Peachparts), so bear with me.
What is the best (or most well-known) magazine on the 911? What is, in your opinion, the best book on the 911 and the Porsche brand? Any documentary suggestions? Thanks in advance! |

Welcome to the other side of Pelican. Are you looking for content in regards to fixes or just items as far as reading up on the brand and learning about new P cars, etc.? I'd first recommend to purchase the 911 red book. It has detailed information about the 911 specifications, options, production numbers, data codes and much more. If you're wanting content in regards to working on your P car when needed, we have a full tech article library that is free for you. You can also pick up Wayne's 101 projects book if you're interested. The Bentley Manual is also another good one. I'm sure more Pelicans will chime in with suggestions as well. Enjoy your stay here and if you ever need anything please don't hesitate to let me know.

Excellence is the best magazine on the 911, overall. But, it's not limited to the 911.
The best books are Ludvigsen's Excellence Was Expected and Brian Long's series on the 911. The former is a huge, 3 volume set on the entire history of Porsche and goes into the most detail on the 911. Brian Long is now publishing a new book on the 911, which is probably a complilation of his earlier, multi-part series. There are a number of other books that I'd recommend, depending on your specific interests. JR Paul Frere wrote a pretty good book on the 911 but it's been through 7 or 8 revisions and it's pretty poorly organized in the later ones. |

A sort of fun non-technical book is The Gold Plated Porsche.
If you join PCA you get a subscription to Panorama. I have an electronic subscription to Total 911 too. I keep the Bentley and Wayne's 101 Projects book handy on the shelf. Like Joe Bob said though the Bentley has some errors you have to watch out for.

Wow, thank you everyone on all the leads! Looks like I have quite a bit of material to start up my 911 library!
I work in a classic car gallery and would like to have some Porsche magazines available while our customers wait. We would also thinking about advertising in one or two of them. —Porsche Post, GTPorsche, 911&Porsche World, Classic Porsche... Excellence sounds... excellent. PCA, much like "The Star", is a major contender as well. |

If you want a broad overview of what you might want to know about your 911 as a car, Try ''The Used 911 Story'' by Peter Zimmermann.
You will learn more about your car in an afternoon than we can tell you in a month. |

I just went through the book search over the past 6 months and am still reading daily. The red book, the Used 911 Story, 101 Projects, Bentley Manual -all great books! You'll find you have to search and pay some goofy prices sometimes, and next thing you know you have 911 books all over the house. Welcome to the fold.

I have Wayne's books and they are current with respect to more modern solutions for the old 911. However, I really like the Bruce Anderson book as he wrote it in the air cooled heyday. He was also a technical writer for for a massive company, maybe General Electric? His writing style is smooth without wasting words. The Hayne's books written by Peter Morgan/Lindsay Porter are favorable choices.

For a good intro to the history/evolution of the 911, you can not much better than Paul Frere's "911 Story".
For interesting articles, Excellence Magazine talks about all things Porsche.

The Bible is the Factory Shop Manual, the Bentley is the Cliffs notes version. The FSM is the best. I have early, mid year and carrera fsms, also have the Carerra version on PDF on my iPad, for ease of shop viewing!
