Converting comfort seats to sport seats

Hi Pelicans,

Question for you; Can an upholsterer "easily" convert my comfort seats to sport seats? I spoke to the upholsterer over the phone and he told me it should not be a problem. When I spoke to the service tech at Porsche, he was very sceptical. Thoughts? Has anyone attempted this before? I figure that the limiting factor would be the structural build of he sport seat that's absent in the comfort seat.

Thanks!

Well , if the shop knows how to weld, I see why not. But it must be a pretty penny to do so, no?

If it were me, I would keep the stock seats & buy a set of sport seats.

Or add a little more & get aftermarket sport seats- Recaro, Sparco, etc.

It all depends on what purpose you need sport seats for.

Thanks Mo-mon. I want to go to sport seats for the support they provide. I used to have a boxster and I loved the seats in it. I find the comfort seats too "sloppy". Another important factor is keeping the car period correct as I want to get collector plates next year.

Heritage trim offers (or used to offer) the conversion from comfort to sport seats. I believe they would modify the frame and install new foam.

http://www.heritagetrim.com/contact/

They used to advertise it on their site, can't find it now though. I remember they offered it for the 85+ seat, don't recall if they also did it for earlier seat though.

Classic 9 might do it too, not sure though. http://www.classic9leathershop.com/contact-us

Spoke with Heritage about 4 years ago and the comfort to sport conversion was about $2500 with choice of fabric, piping etc. for both seats. Seemed reasonable but couldn't pull the trigger. Their old web site gave excellent detail on the conversion. Still struggling with decision. Recaro sportsters could be it but dark, dark brown sports may top them.

Any collective info on Heritage?

I converted my seats. I would not recommend it. It's a lot of work to modify the seat frames. Then custom upholstery.

For the money, buy some race seats or "tuner" seats. Make the mounts so you can swap them out if you want comfort for trips.

Once I put race seats in my car I padded them to be comfortable. I found them to be fine for everyday driving and never put my modified seats back in!

You can buy used race seats, have them re-upholstered to be nice looking and comfortable. And be money ahead.

Comfort seats to Sport seats PanAm conversion

Hi Guys, the real deal is underneath, as we get rid of the springs and replace it with our duralastic belts- more comfort-lower seating position and we can build up the lumbar support.

that's a good question bubba, we had an upholster do our other 944 seats and they did an outstanding job! As a matter of fact, if you ever seen the American tv show Fast N Loud, we used Sue at A.S.M do it, They are just a few minutes up the street in Dallas, and I got to meet miss Sue! I have seen some killer custom autos getting the full leather treatment, so good luck! Now get you some of that!

Well, to do the job right you have to weld supports for the raised side supports to the frame, the rest an upholsterer can do with foam sculpturing...Most upholsterer don't have the elastic belts for the support so you still would have to do with the metal springs.
