Power Window woes

1988 Carrera. Hoping one of you guys have your Bentley handy and can cross examine my trouble shooting. Backstory. Car was dead. Seems as the driverside window switch went bad and stayed in the up or down position. Charged battery and replaced switch. Window will not roll up or down. Passenger side works from both driver and passenger side switches. Fuse and relay okay. Now the part where we may need the Manual. I pull the driver switch out and connect the alligator clip from my test light to the blue wire from switch ( going to motor) I then touch the point to the Black/Blue wire to/from motor and it lights up good. If I'm doing and seeing all this correctly, then I have power to and from the motor.....so either I have a stuck or burned up window motor. Sorry for the long post but I could use some help. Does this look like I'm checking the right wires? Thanks

It sounds like it is the motor. To test, unbolt the window motor so that you can lower it enough to have access to the electrical connector, remove the electrical connector and run a set of wires from your battery to see if the motor reacts. If the motor operates, than perhaps the window is jammed.

Regards,
David

It does sound like you may have burned up your motor due to a stuck window switch... I have found these window switches to be fairly unreliable to the point where if I put my window all the way down, I then bump it up slightly to make sure it's not in the 'stuck down' mode.

Thanks guys. And thanks brcorp, I have the schematics. I just really needed a second opinion on my logic. With the other opinions here I'm thinking a burned up motor. I'll do like Dyekes says and test the motor ( didn't realize you could get to the connectors like that) then check for shorts between the switch and motor. Any idea how hard one of these are to replace? Been a while since I had the panel off but seems like I remember things being damn tight in there....?

Open your tool bag and find the tool that allows you to manually roll the window up and down. Look in your manual on this. On your '88, you need to unscrew the speaker cover for the tweeter, pierce the vapor barrier to insert the tool. Manually crank it to see if that frees the window up. If not, you can also try bumping the door card where the motor is located while the switch is in the on position... that frees mine up when it occasionally acts up. Have fun...

Good call. I had forgotten about that. The car did sit for a while once and I had to do this to free them both up. I'll give that a try before tearing things apart.

Thanks again to everybody for the help. Sometimes it just takes a few people to throw ideas at ya. jlex is the winner. It just needed a wiggle to unfreeze things a bit.

The window on my '88 will jam every once in a while as well. The trick with the allen wrench works every time. I wish I knew what the underlying cause was though.
