OK fellers, Q about operating temp, my 72S ran much hotter than this new car, or the gauge is messed up. With outside temp in the 50's drove several hundred miles and the temp never went above about 135 or so...today after cruising for 45 minutes in traffic it got as high as maybe 140, my 72S seemed to typically run 180-190 when running at high speeds. Is my gauge hosed up?
Also, there is a spring hanging from the throttle bar and running to the rear of the eng compartment, looks kinda jury rigged but am new to MFI animals...thanks Chris btw flew one of the last hornets made today, lot 21....still smelled new... |

that's too low to be right. might have a later sender or gauge. they need to be matched. check the numbers.
no ugly spring, stock. they typically need some help to return to idle with worn linkage balls and sockets, etc. [This message has been edited by john walker's workshop (edited 10-19-2001).] |

Chris, BTW, what does a new F-18 smell like anyway? If I was in it, I know what it would smell like- tossed cookies.

Chris, you might try a little grease on the ball/sockets in the linkage, and don't forget the one under the car. A mechanic once told me to NOT fill the socket with grease, just use a rag or something, grease on the balls only. (yeah, I know, a jet jockey could think of lots of stuff to say about greased balls

Gibson, a new cockpit smell is really more of what you dont smell...after logging many flights they take on the faint odor of JP5 and boxing gear (sweat)...and exhaust fumes.
Gotta say, an old 911 driver would barely notice it ![]() |

My '70E ran 176F all the time. In the winter it took a little longer to warm up. At that time I was running Valvolene Racing Oil either 30 or 40. I used this to regulate the temperature. This was before the modern synthetics were available.
