Fuched Fuchs

A few years ago when I first got my SC I really wanted wider wheels. I did some reading and decided I HAD to have a set of 16x8 951 Fuchs. A set popped up, can't remember if it was here or eBay but ***PRESTO*** I had a set.

Fast forward to about a year ago when I was finally ready to throw rubber on them and put the skinny stock wheels in storage. Now my first mistake was buying 951 Fuchs. I should have (and eventually did) get replicas. You don't feel as bad when your curb a replica, or a shop scratches them within the first 10 minutes of them being out of the box... but I digress. My second very stupid mistake was not looking at both wheels as soon as they arrived. I popped the first one out, said my oohs and ahh and put it back in the box, which is where they both set for a long long time.

And then it happened. I went to clean the wheels to prep them for paint and something caught my eye. It was so small I almost missed it, but after I found it I was beyond furious. A hole had been drilled (or started) along one of the mounting holes. Worst of all, I didn't know who or when the sale was, so I have no way to go back and check the details.

My question is: Can this be fixed and if not what are these wheels worth with something like this done to them? Other than the blemish, they are steetable and will clean up well.

Prior owner probably lost the wheel lock key and drilled the lug off and went to deep. Rim may or not be compromised.

Check with Harvey Weidman of Weidman's Wheels (530) 534-7903. He is tough to get on the phone though. You may be better off mailing him a letter and including a picture and stamped self-addressed envelope. 1675 Wyandotte Ave. Oroville CA 95966
I am not sure he is much of a computer guy. Good luck.

That looks pretty minor. It's small and it hasn't breached the hole. If you street the car throw them on. if you AX then replace it. If it bothers you, sell it with full disclosure and replace it. Lots of fuchs for sale.

Weidman does amazing work at a three fold cost. 1. actual money cost 2. Time (one guy has been waiting over 2 years for his -just posted in another thread) 3. And as someone else mentioned ==customer service.

If you aren't a computer guy, you have to be a phone guy. Otherwise you are a no customer service guy. I get that he has the premium wheel Fuchs wheel finish rep, but Al reeds and fuchsrestoration look just as good imho. You may even find a local hot rod wheel shop that can weld and machine that blemish right.

What's your intended use for the Fuchs? Per this thread, Wheels: 16x8 951's vs 911's, they're best for running wide tires up front and will not extend the width in rear.

My intended use now is to figure out the best way to fix them and then sell them. I have a set of 17" Euromeisters on the car now.

I may just post them up with full disclosure and be done with them.

Or make a clock.

If it were me I would just clean it up and fill the hole with some JB weld and drive on it.

I would clean them up and run them. You are missing maybe 10% surface area on one lug and it won't be visible when the nut is on. I definitely wouldn't be worried about strength, Fuchs are forged.

If you've got a local shop that's been around for a long, long time, they are probably handy with welding and good machinists. I got a wheel like that shopping here and my local guy said he could weld some material back in there - AND, he'd ground his own special bit to smooth it back out.

I opted not to act yet and just put the wheel with my "cruising" set. I don't think you need to give up on it.

good luck,

My experience with having somebody else fix something like that it always comes back worse. I would use them as is or sell them with full disclosure let somebody else deal with it

Steve -- seems you have what you need from this thread to both reassure a potential buyer and give them some good alternatives re using/fixing going forward.
