Restore or replace? (Fuel tank)
I'm finally getting time to crack into my recently acquired (8 months ago) '76 911 and started by emptying the fuel tank. The car had been sitting for about 8 years and I was weary of the fuel's condition. Upon draining the tank, as we could all suspect, the fuel was gnarly and little rust particles came out.
Now, I'm faced with either removing the tank to clean and seal it, or save some time and replace it. Also, would it make sense to run new fuel lines from the tank to the engine bay, as they're possibly in terrible shape as well? Does that sound like overkill? A "Porsche" tank is pretty pricey but, there are some aftermarket one at half or less the cost. I'd assume go with an aftermarket guy, if I do in fact forego the restore on the current one. What experience do you guys have with this? |

I would FOR SURE replace the fuel hoses especially if it's been sitting for 8 years. That's right up there with seatbelts and brakes when it comes to safety. Who knows how old they are?
Cohline 2240 hoses are what I used for ethanol compatibility. They have Viton inner tubing that should hold up for a long time. |

I would remove the fuel sender and using a strong light ascess the interior condition for cleaning or replacement. Rob

FYI, most of the new replacement tanks do not have the bung for the removable filter. Not the biggest deal, but finding an inline fuel filter to fit near the fuel pump is oddly difficult. There is thread here somewhere describing the various options people have tried - and hopefully a solution by now too.

Yeah, I know. I don't have much choice. I'm also moving the fuel pump and changing the whole system to an 84+ configuration. It'll be work.

I would not change the hared plastic fuel lines that run thru the tunnel. They usually last almost forever. I would replace the fuel line from the tank to the hard lines in the tunnel, and, from the hard lines in the tunnel to the engine.
