3.2 upgrade to an early car??? HELP
Does anyone know of a good article or possible a wiring diagram pertaining to upgrading an early car to a 3.2 with Motronic?
Can't seem to find anything but I know a lot of people have done this successfully. Thanks, Chris |

Having driven Marc's car very soon after the 3.2 was in, and while it was still being sorted, I can tell you that it is a great upgrade for any early car. Sure, the 3.6 is too, but the 3.2 delivers some serious punch.

I just did it into a 1970 Chassis,
What questions do you have? Jim

Jim (and others),
Can you guys post a complete list of all of the parts one should get from the donor car, the new parts needed and the parts that should be kept from the transplant recipient to make the switch? I'm getting ready to sell my current engine to start the process and I need to put together a complete budget for this. Oh, recipient will be (in my case) a 69 E MFI with the original 901. Thanks.

Yes, I would like answers to Rich Mason's questions also.
But, assuming you did not get the end of the wiring harness that goes to the forward part of the car, what are the necessary connections there. My harness is complete from the brain to the motor...I am concerned about everything else. Thanks, Chris |

Remember to keep the transmission mounting studs from your original tranny or whichever one you're using. When we did Marc's, his donor engine was an '89 3.2, which came with G50 studs. They are way too long to fit on a 915 or 901. You'll need a special drill bit for that fun job of drilling below your driver's side back seat to run the harness. And you'll need to rig something to mount the DME brain and relay under your driver's seat. You may also need to change your oil pressure sender to bar or whatever meas. unit it uses. Be sure to note whether the oil temp sensor in the engine and your gauge are numerical or the white tick marks. They must both be the same. That's all I can think of, but I'm probably missing some stuff.

Well, here is a start,
on an early chassis, there is not enough room to run the wiring harness behing the shock tower and down to the floor level where the later cars break through the farewall, so I put my hole above the shock tower as far over to the drivers side as I could. You will need to run an additional fuel line for the return line. the wiring harness is not too tough, from memory, the lines that normally would run to the front of the later model car under the seat, only has power and ground, and a fuel pump line (DME controls the fuel pump as rev limiter, so I am told) There is one of those 14 pin connectors on the motor which normally would hook into the side pannel in the engine bay, and on my 1970 there was one that came to the same place, both of the same sex and they do not match. however I have uploaded a spreadsheet which shows that mapping on my website. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/addictionmotorsports.com you will also want to keep the cylindrical electronic thing which somehow converts a signal off the coil into something your tach can understand, unless you also update your tach. that is all I can remember right now....but send me emails with any questions and I will shoot photos and answer them best I can. My car is complete (less speedo right now) and everything is working and I preserved the wiring where ever I could. Jim@addictionmotorsports.com |

so I can use my original 2.0 MFI fuel pump, flywheel, clutch, t/o bearing, pressure plate and oil lines? What about the ignition system - I guess I can get rid of my CD unit? Do I need the relay board and relays from the later car? Finally, I guess an external oil cooler is a must, even for a non-track car?

I don't the rest of that stuff, but yes, you'll need to run an external cooler and the lines too. That's a good opportunity to install a manual switch for it, so you can turn the fan on from inside the car. I think Marcesq did this.

901 transmission as original. I guess it will have to be notched for the crank sensors but it should handle the power fine the way I drive - no drag racing! How about the ignition parts from the later car - do I just take the whole relay board or is that for other accessories?

the relay board is for other stuff, not the motor, you only need the stuff that was under the drivers seat, DME, relay, and alt sensor.
I am not sure but I think a 901 trani's flywheel has a different bolt pattern than the 3.2 motor, so I am not sure what to do there. Jim
