Tire Recommendation???

All

It has been a while. Anyway my 85 carerra cab needs new tires. What is new is that I got 1st gen zuffs (17") that have 225/45s and 255/40 Dunlop Digi somethings. This summer I had elephant install a street perf1/2 suspension upgrade and set it to roughly euro height. Front fenders have a slight roll.

It is super tight, so I need something the same overall size. I know some tires run larger/smaller. I don't want to do any more fender rolling.

Any recommendations?

Jack

I run Continental Extreme Contact in those sizes you listed on the same wheels you have.

As well, I have a slight roll on my front fenders. Running 22 and 28 mm TBs with dampers valved to those springs, I used to run Dunlop Star Specs. I found the ride kinda harsh on the crappy pavement we had in the city in which I lived. The car rode like a Cadillac (comparatively) after I switched to the Contis. They're not as sharp in the handling department but it's a tradeoff I'm willing to make to have a ride that's far more comfortable. However, if it was a more track oriented or autocross car, I might have a different opinion.

Thanks! I don't do any auto cross and lately I am taming it down a bit even on the street. Both of us are getting too old and too valuable.

Sounds like staying with the same size makes sense. All tires are a tradeoff so just depends on what you want from them.

Longevity 5k, 10k, 20k?
Wet grip?
Dry grip?
Ever drive in snow or regularly below 40F ambient?
Firm sidewalls with crisp turn-in or more of a comfy ride?
Price for a full set installed? 500? 1000? 1500?

Pick your poison and there are several good tires out there.

No snow or rain, I don't drive it if I have to put the top up. I honestly put enough miles on it before the tires would rot. Looks like tire rack has a sale on some of these sizes...

I put on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3+ 225/45- 255/40 on my '81SC recently and I love them. Another Pelican friend of mine TIRWIN put them on and feels the same.
Costco has a $70 discount on all Michelin thru Jan. I did a lot of research and they have the best price with mount/balance, nitrogen inflation and road hazard. That tire also has great wear ratings. Research the ratings on TireRack!
Here's a thread discusion that addresses the Michelin Pilot Sport 3+ quite a bit.
Happy shopping!
Tire feedback: 225/45-17 & 255/40-17

Awesome, thanks for the tip! Even with a closeout sale on the Contis at Tire Rack (add shipping and mounting), the Michelins are only 60 bucks different from Costco...seems like a good thing to me!

Have a good one all!

AS3+ and BFG Gforce Comp2 are two of the best A/S tires for our cars. Good road manners, good in cold weather down to 0F, last long time. They give up a bit of dry grip compared with max summer tires but still very respectable for canyon carving. Either of these should satisfy.
