Question Rebuilt pre-68 tailights

Hello the whole board !

My first question on this forum will be :
Have someone already rebuilt a 65-68 tailight ?
Il yes, how to separate the lens from the bloc without breaking it !
and how to re-assemble it again, does the seal exists ?

Thank you
dooop

i don't know if that seal exists. i thought i could re-use the original but no - it was over 30 years old. instead i used a clear silicone which has worked well - no visible moisture on the inside of the lens. took the time to mask a bead along the edge and spread the silicone with a credit card.

considering the lens are tab-melted i don't think there is any way to remove them without breaking them. i had a new set to install so i didn't care. the lens recently became available for the SWB 65-68 cars and should be about $55 ea for the fronts. you have to melt the new tabs to hold them into the assemblies. i used a soldering gun. very easy. somewhat cheap. looks so much better than faded lenses.

good luck,
bob

dooop - i have refurbished a few sets of F&R '65-'68 lights & used the technique Bob described above (clear silicone in lieu of lens seal & using a soldering iron to melt the lens tabs at the rear). In addition, replacement hollow copper rivets were supplied which also locate the lenses via the holes at either end which take the screws to attach the units to the car. The replacement lenses are available from several outlets in Germany & Holland - email me directly if you want their contact details.

I have a pair of early tail light assemblies in excellent unrestored original condition. Please send me an e-mail if you're interested. I'm on the road on business right now, but will be back in the office on Wednesday.
