Audible Oil level Alarm and Block Temp Alarm and Exhaust Manifold Temp Alarm
Are all 3 a good idea for any 911SC, and if so from what source?
Since a safe driver is supposed to be looking primarily at the road and mirrors, and much less importantly due to safety concerns, only periodically at the gauges and in the real world with kids in the car or being on the phone or enjoying a good song, in the few minutes go by without looking at your gauges or (or 10 minutes) you can sustain a broken fan belt and destroy the engine due to overheating. Furthermore, you can suffer a catastrophic loss of oil and the result would be obvious, and could it go unnoticed until too late? Obviously, yes. Unrelated, hypothetically maybe your mechanic was slightly distracted while tuning your engine so although pretty well tuned around town, the combination of somewhat low oil and uphill driving conditions at high altitude with an excessively lean mixture make your exhaust manifold temp to rise too high causing damage. Wouldn't it be nice to get an audible alarm for oil level too, and for block temp too high, and also manifold temp too high? Perhaps you'd say it's overkill. I saw something being offered in Australia online, called the Engine Watchdog but it's not clear it will work for air cooled engines. Is there any other one that people have used? Is there something for Low Oil that people have used? How about for exhaust manifold temp? Last edited by octanemaestro; 02-04-2017 at 05:00 AM.. |

There is so much oil in a 911, that I doubt this would ever be an issue, unless you sprung a pretty fair leak. You drive the car until hot, and if you park and check your oil at the end of every drive, you should always have oil. But you check it every time.
If you find that your car runs hot oil temps, many SC owners upgrade to a Carrera oil cooler and fan, or some other kind of cooler that is more of a radiator than the trombone cooler that SCs came with. This would be your best protection from overheating, IMO. Putting in a wideband sensor would probably be your easiest method of monitoring lean running conditions, but I thought that cars tended to run rich at altitude. OTOH, what do I know ? |
