New Oil Pump for Rebuild - New Sump Plate has no Drain?

Rebuilding my 1979 SC, and my old oil pump had died. I have a new pump, but the new one has an integrated screen filter and protrudes further down than the old pump. Due to this, the original sump plate doesn't fit. I found plates that are rounded out to fit, but they don't have an oil plug.

Obviously I need a plug, so I'm curious what folks here recommend. I don't have a welder, so I'm not prepared to weld a nut onto a rounded plate and make my own.

many 911 boys just installed the strainer plate without the plug--as a mechanic i cursed every time i had to do the oil change -but..it is doable like that.Remember you do really have to remove it once a year;-) or more

you have a 3.2 pump or larger and they (3.2, 3.6 , GT3)all had side of case drain plugs so thats why the sump plate has no drain plug.

That looks like what I need. Price isn't too bad either, hmm.

Pictures can be deceiving, but the new oil pump looks like it protrudes more than the concave section of the sun plate?

Is that why you needed to rebuild the engine? Any idea what happened?

Just curious, you don't hear about failed oil pumps very often.

The pump died due to chunks of piston circulating inside the engine. The root cause is not 100% certain, but the immediate effect was that an intake valve broke or dropped into number 3 cylinder, and proceeded to get the hell beaten out of it while decimating the piston. Engine locked up shortly afterwards as the intake rocker arm broke, and its adjustment bolt jammed the camshaft.

Destroyed piston and cylinder and bent rod led to a total replacement of the sets of those components, along with oil pump and oil cooler and all the other while-you're-in-there components.

I think that that particular plate does not have clearance for the deeper pump. Probably worth confirming with pelican parts customer service.

The one I linked above is indeed the later, deeper hemispherical style to go with integrated screen oil pumps.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I've wondered about the quality at that price.

I assume you were using a fresh aluminum crush washer at the drain plug each time?

I would like to add to your list of side drain case engine displacements. I have a late ‘83 SC and the original engine came with the side drain and no plate. Yes, original engine for the car 930/16.

They must have run out of plate type cases during the last of the 3.0L’s.

You are the lucky one , 1983+1/2 was the best of the 911SC they made-in your case they already used the Carrera engine case....not too many of these ..
