Cool Preliminary tuning results

Since I've bugged the board a lot during my first round of routine maintenance, I thought I'd give an update.

What was done:

(1) Big one - rebuilt carbs and added 36mm venturis and 180 air correction jets (per Richard at PMO), initial tuning

(2) adjusted valves

(3) new, cooler NGK plugs

(4) "fiddled" with timing. I can't adjust to 5 ATDC (per '72 spec) because the dizzy doesn't move far enough. So I checked that it advances smoothly to ~35 BTDC at 6000 rpm. Idles about 5 BTDC

(5) adjusted linkage - really loose. See below...

Results:

Well, first, IT RUNS!! Goes fast, too. I funny thing with #5 - I discovered the throttle was only openning about 75%. I think there are only two other people on this board that have driven my car. Well guys, I now have full throttle! Pulls much smoother all the way to the 7200 redline.

Bonus: I can drive it hard, pull into the garage, shut it down and have no gasoline smell in the engine compartment!

To do:

(1) More work on the timing - I'm still not comfortable with the situation ...

(2) The carbs need more tuning. Still have some popping (carbs and exhaust), particularly during decelleration and some low rpm.

Of course, it's going to snow 6" tonight .... Oh well...
