Thumbs up Oil Temp Overlays from New Vintage

Have been wanting to go from meaningless lines to numbers for oil temp but not wanting to pay to send the gauge in some place and paying $150. Stumbled upon New Vintage USAs site. An overlay can be yours for less than $50 including shipping. They also provide illustrated instructions. Just ordered mine. PayPal required.

ordered one for my 87. Got it in sitting on my bench and will be changing it when I do the steering wheel and LED lights.
Seems like a quality product.

Purchased one of their "Combo" gauges (oil temp & pressure, volts & fuel) which you see to the left of each post. It lives in my 914 3.0 and is total quality. Don't believe they offer the combo any longer. No affiliation.

I liked that idea, but wanted the number scale in Celsius instead, and when I contacted New Vintage they said I'd need to pay for custom work. So I tried making my own in Photoshop, with reasonable success. Mine is for style B above. I printed my first draft on glossy photo paper, which isn't totally correct, but still looks good enough that I can't tell the difference unless the sun shines directly on the gauge over my shoulder. Someday I'll print a page of them on a matte finish paper and that should be really close.

Poor focus on the picture, the numbers are plenty sharp in real life.

I had the same thought regarding doing it in Celsius. Did they give you a price, Arne? I will give them a call, too. Maybe if enough of us do it they will give a better deal. They are actually located nearby, so I might visit them...

Used them a while ago. Good product and much easier to glance at. I wanted Celsius as well but I'm totally over that now.
Glare. GLARE!!! Ugh. So hard to photgraph these things.

Lyle, my inquiry was several years ago, can't recall exactly how much, but it was a chunk. I figured at the time I might just as well buy a new gauge module rather than the face only. Seems like something around $250 for the first one, and any additional at the same time would be $40 each or so. And they indicated that they would not retain the necessary artwork, so if any one wanted one later, it would be the same deal - $250 for the first + ...

It was abundantly clear that they had no interest in taking this on. Which is why I moved on to doing it myself.

Thanks a lot, Arne. Since it's been a while, maybe they have changed their tune; I will find out and report back. Great effort on your part with the overlay you did. I am also wondering if Pawel (noboco) in Poland could do a high tech one. He does beautiful reproduction stickers and decals. I think I will reach out to him, also.

Good luck, Lyle.

FWIW, I printed a whole page of these when I did mine, a full dozen of them. That way I had more in case I screwed up cutting one out, or in case it faded or deteriorated over time, I could just cut out and install a fresh one. As it turns out, neither has happened, I still have the first one I cut out in the car. No noticeable fading after 3 years so far.

Look up marks914 here on the forums. He's with New Vintage USA and was providing gauge services to Pelican members directly here for a number of years. Did some pretty nice stuff.

No affiliation on my part. Just passing along that he posted on here from 2003-2011 and made some nice gauge installs.

Nope, not really. I checked with New Vintage this week and they quoted me $200 for a Celsius overlay.

It seems a little odd to me that with the interest even on this thread it might make a good business case to stock the metric gauge overlay. Maybe they're waiting for the first customer to front the cash for the tooling...
