915 shifter linkage play after replacing bushing, video attached

Hi Guys,

I had to pull my 915 for reconditioning. Previously I had replaced all the bushes in the linkage section. The joint that's under the inspection plate behind the drivers seat still has play in it . I purchased nylon bushes from a well know parts supplier.

Could you take a look and confirm if this is acceptable or not please.

Thanks

That doesn't look right. I just replaced my bushings in that same coupler and it is nice and very snug now. Does your "input" move in other directions? Your video shows only movement in forward and aft direction, does the joint have play in the "up and down" direction? Either way those bushings are toast.

Definitely not right, needs new bushings for sure.

Omegaman 02-09-2017 05:52 AM

No up and down movement .....they have only done a few hundred miles and were like this from day one. I guess I will have to contact the supplier and ask if they can send me another set. Thanks for the replies

The factory bushing does have an oval hole-some fore and aft movement is actually normal
but lots of the replacement bushings use a round hole so no play.

Porsche 911 SuperPro Gearshift Coupling Friction Rings - SPF0893K | Design 911

Link above shows the type I used. Link corrected

Definitely not right. There's a lot of difference between the many suppliers. Tried different ones an eventually bought a new shifter coupler. Few bucks more but all worth it.
Just my opinion.

Open your wallet and get a Stomski or Wevo coupler....you will not regret it and it will last forever which those plastic bushings DO NOT!!

Thanks for that, would appear to be the same as mine. I was surprised that it had movement.

Years ago a local Porsche trained mechanic told me that the small amount of for and aft play was normal. (It may vary year by year)
According to him it actually assist shifting performance by allowing the syncros to "pull in" the gear as you shift.

He's long since retired.

Shift bush

Like others have said, depends on supplier and make ,the ones you show
there is to much for aft play. Dont re order from that maker . Go to our Host.
This may help. Pelican actually sells many different makes shift rod bushes and sets,
Over the years the best i have used is Black Darstar-1758-424-m523 $9.25 made of
polygraphite material. This is under there listing --shift indicators.
They also sell Delrin----$18.50,then there is a white set forgot price--not as good.
Then there is a full kit set , ball cup, rod bushing, shift rod bushing. And then alloy and Brass etc. The Darstar fit perfect not to firm not to loose, . Because i have owned
four different years 911s,this is my experience.

this is the best in my opinion

Wayne is right on. This is one of the most frequent topics on this board. The play is built in from the factory. The referenced bushings all have round, rather than elongated holes for the coupler pin, preventing the slot that is so apparent in your vid.
I've tried both the $20.00 bushings, and the $200.00 custom u-joints. Both are effective, and I can't tell the difference. In fact, I replaced my Wevo coupler with round bushings.

I concur. There may be other options, but one of the many upgrades I've made to my shifter is the Wevo coupler. I recommend investing in it or something like it.

I actually just rebuilt this same coupling this week too. The new bushings came from our host but I don't recall which brand I bought offhand. I do know before I took the old bushings out they looked a lot like the video from the OP. Once the new bushings or installed I had no slop and I am very happy with the results.

me too!!!!

Pstallo 02-09-2017 08:34 PM

I used a $1.00 Sharpie to mark by old coupler position, installed the new one, and was off and running in a matter of minutes. The Wevo coupler, some new shifter plastic thingies, and a JWest shifter were probably the most intelligent upgrades I've made since buying the car.

Omegaman 02-10-2017 07:01 AM

I sent the video link to a well know 915 gearbox specialist and he replied saying the play was "standard" and ok. I guess rotational play would be another story. I would still like to try a coupler without fore and aft play just to compare. I have replaced the ball cup and the shifter bushes so it should be as good as new once I get my gearbox back.

Thanks or all the responses/info.
