915 rebuild costs

I think I'm going to need a rebuild on my 1975 915, and maybe get it ready for 300+ horsepower. Who does that kinda work, and what does it run? I've let this trans sit empty of fluid now for a few months.

I think it depends on the condition of your 915 and there are tranny specialists around that do that kind of work. I spent about $2,500 a couple years ago that included replacing all synchros and two sliders. I also beefed it up by putting a stronger side plate and Wevo bearing upgrade and also a Guard LSD unit. Those additional parts aren't included in the $2,500.

You might want to call and talk to the guys at CMS - they did our 915 for a 3.8L race car at about 300HP at the crank . . . happy customer

$10,000 give or take.
Now, you -can- do it for less. But it you go with new guard gears, oil cooler, wevo bearings, gate shift, side plate... so on so forth $10k will be easy to hit- you should also consider lsd.

I need to do this for my 3.6 swap- I may just sell the car

A 915 won't hold up to 300 hp in stock configuration. Mine tossed it's cookies and in my build I added the WEVO intermediate plate support. The hp/torque ovalled the IM bearing and exploded 2nd gear. That plate keeps the shafts from flexing. So far so good after six years.

TRE or John Walker both are on the board and you can PM them. Both are highly respected members. You don't list a location but you might do so and see if there is someone near you so to avoid shipping.

Good Luck.

An early 915 DOES need more upgrades than my 83 model did....so you maybe able to purchase a built one with the mods listed post #8 if you want to take it that far. Have you considered a 930 or G50 box? Those are built tough but also require mods to fit in your tub.

930 bell housing, G50 coil over etc......

There are some rumors that you can shift the engine back an inch- use a shortened g50 tranny and get away without cutting the car up- that said- I don't have supporting info for it.

Patrick motor sports will do the g50 conversion (you show up with no parts and walk out with the swap
Done) without rebuild you are looking at $20,000- just food for thought.

There is also a gentleman on this form that is using a Subaru sri transmission, but it's a ton of work

I love spending other people's money...but I would highly suggest avoiding PMS. High priced, slow and their customer service sucks.

Long time feud with them and there are a number of other detractors I can put you in touch with.

Mick, all you need is the Kim-Kardashian-azz-load of torque that turbo powaaaa provides and then you won't need all those pesky gears to keep you in the powaaaa band! You will need something other than a 915 gearbox, though!!!

If you have some $$$ check out twinsparkracing.com in Europe. They remove the worn 915 port and strengthen by installing steel wevo inserts. They specialize in 910 and 915 gearboxes.

Good luck!

California Motorsports is very good. I get most of my parts from Roger there.
His prices are fair and service is great. I've built 915s for track cars that withstood
300 but ham fisted drivers will have trouble.

Levi - Re: CMS 915 work
We had to have a LOT done to ours including new/used bell housing, Guards 3rd gear, etc, etc . . .
We broke a pinon gear tooth off and it ended up in the 5th/reverse area preventing a reverse or
5th gear shift -- we upgraded the side plate to install a larger Turbo bearing and rebuilt the LSD.
New bearings and replaced forks with good used ones - added CMS bottom fork cover plate to add Trans cooler lines . . .
And, many small parts like turbo syncros etc.
Cost = 8K Basic rebuild labor cost was 995 + plus parts and extras added as we went . . .
They sent Emails with photos of parts that needed replaced and discussed on the phone what we
wanted to do and what our options were. We had just worn out the 915 with racing 5 years by us and PO with a 3.2L engine .

But now we have an excellent race quality 915 box.

I can see how a 915 basic street rebuild would be about 3K if there was no serious damage.

Regards,

Tre

I had TRE rebuild my 915 about 8 years ago. It was not cheap, but worth every penny of it. Dave installed the Wevo shift gate and I love it......great improvement.

Full race prepped 915 transmissions from Aase Motors are used extensively in the SoCal region for cars that need a high torque/ clipped HP combo to meet HP to weight ratios within class competition.

Why would it cost $10,000 to rebuild a 915 if a lot of the parts are still good? Holy cow! If my 915 goes my car will become a very pretty planter with ferns and philodendrons.
