Just wanted to drop a note of thanks to everyone on the board. The wife and I dropped the engine in our ‘83 Targa this afternoon. Wayne, your article was invaluable. Gave us the extra information not found readily in Bentley, Haynes, nor Porsche Service Manuals. We are now going to prepare and fix those nasty head studs. The only issue we ran into was the 10mm stud above the starter motor. It appears as though someone previously had partially stripped it when tightening. Caused us much trouble. Hope Pelican stocks that little bugger.
Took pictures, but they will need developing. Aside from my sore shoulder, it was a good experience for us. Thanks again, David |

Perhaps your wife can speak to my fiance? After Hershey, she lost interest....but does like driving fast in it. Love to get her to work on it with me, I could use the extra set of hands.

Spent part of Saturday working with horses, finishing the garage we built over the summer, putting the car up, and going into work and working some on the evening. We started about 11:00 am Sunday and finished at about 5:45 pm. My wife came in and helped with the last part of pulling the engine. The biggest issue was the 10mm Hex stud on the top of the starter. Both the wife and I attempted to break it free. Problem was it had been stripped before we started working on it. Don't know if this was factory or a replaced starter. I do not believe the PO had any engine work done.
We put the car up on railroad ties and 12K lb wheel jacks. We will finish pulling the engine from under the car tonight after using scissor jacks to push the car up 6 more inches. Pics are about a week away or so. The 10mm Hex thingy took about 2.5 hours to work free. Most of the rest of our time was comparing notes from the four sources on how to remove. The Ground to the transmission was not that hard, once my wife figured out where it was. As far as getting her to help, we do most things together, always have. Just two weeks ago we were building a barn and putting up 300 feet of fencing together. Of course she did leave the electric fence to me to finish up. ![]() Hope this helps. Oh yeah, my wife used to lift weights and run track. Who knew she would get under the car and wrench? David |
