I have 1985 Carrera coupe with the electronically controlled flapper boxes. They work and open heat access, but the footwell blowers have failed on both sides, as a result I get very little heat into the cabin.
Can I make some modifications to eliminate the blowers or some other option to get some heat? I dont need too much heat, I live in Texas. ![]() __________________ This post was auto-generated based upon a question asked on our tech article page here: Porsche 911 Heater System Repair | 911 (1965-89) - 930 Turbo (1975-89) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article |

I don't believe there is a delete for those the circuitry ties in to the rear blower. I suppose (but I am not familiar with this approach) you might be able to get rid of all the blowers if you don't need any heat. NICE HEADERS!! Bet she sounds sweet.

Are you sure the blower on top of the engine is working? The blower on top of the engine does the most work as it's first in line, pulling the heat from the exchangers. The footwell blowers are next in line to "boost" the flow and keep it flowing. But I don't know that the footwell blowers are a must to have in the system. The earlier cars like SCs, without the footwell blowers, do OK making heat
On the other hand, do a search here and see if someone has posted about installing replacement motors in the footwell blowers. I know for certain there are a few threads on here where people have sourced a suitable electric motor for the blower on top of the engine. So I suspect there's a solution for the smaller footwell blowers too? Agreed with Casey. FANTASTIC job adapting the original merge pipe to the B&B headers. Nice job wrapping them too!

I only have the engine blower and I can tell you the heat will melt my sneakers if I hold them too close. Targa top is ALWAYS off so I need the heat, and I've never been lacking.
@Kevin, not sure about your comment regarding the B&B + merge pipe; I had the B&B headers years ago and I thought they lined up exactly with the merge pipe by design. Changed them out for my current SSI + M&K and got rid of ALL the drone, but had to lose the merge pipe. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 427k miles |

Hey Chuck! I was looking at the merge pipe where it's been shorted at the top piece that is supposed to go up thru the engine sheetmetal piece. It appears that the upper section of pipe has been chopped off (because it no longer aligned with the hole in the sheetmetal?) and the SCAT hose makes up the difference.
The '86 911 I now have was wearing B&B headers that my buddy Mark (RIP) bought for it many years ago. My recollection was that he tried to fit the original heat exchanger merge pipe to the B&B headers and it didn't fit? So he went without heat in the car, which was kinda goofy. Especially for us midwesterners who experience PLENTY of chilly temps in early spring and late fall!!! Maybe i'm remembering it wrong.

I am in Texas as well. Agree that if the engine compartment blower is working, you don't need the footwell blowers. However if they are not working they provide an airflow restriction. I removed my housings, took out the motors and squirrel cages, plugged the holes in the cover plate where the shaft penetrated, and reinstalled them as "distribution boxes". This way no duct work modification is needed. I have all the heat I need, although I never use it.

Footwell blowers may be a simple $0 fix to get working again.
Not sure how to properly remove footwell blowers... Heater controls 101. Plus, I'm not sure windshield vent is actually working.

Thank you for all the feedback Gentlemen!
I suspected that I could get away with removing the non-functional footwell blowers - which would open up a channel for the top engine mount fan to drive heated air through the channels into the cabin, without the failed footwell fans obstructing travel. I believe that will take care of the problem, to the degree I need. As for why my original B&B heater tube was trimmed - its because I twin plugged my 3.2 and the 964 dissy sits in the way now, so I had to move the heater tube over closer to the wheel well. ![]() ![]() |
